14. Is that how they spelled it?
I didn't know that was his nickname. But when I heard it, I pictured it being spelled "Wickett Pickett"

But then that would be sorta like he played cricket or something. Never mind. I never got to Starbucks today. My brain hurts as a result.

Don't mind me.

3. Pickett's tough, SMOKING 1999 comeback album:

...which, unfortunately, didn't lead to a comeback...but sure as hell provided a kick for his long-time fans.

R.I.P. Wicked Pickett...

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Wilson Pickett knows the heyday of soul is over, but on It's Harder Now, his first recording in over 10 years, he makes a determined effort to keep the party going. And for the most part, he succeeds; on "Outskirts of Town," "Bad People," and "Stone Crazy World," he sounds like he's having the time of his life. This isn't any super-milkshake-smooth soul, either; the author of "In the Midnight Hour" and "Mustang Sally" sounds more like a double shot of J.D., straight up. Still, Pickett knows that he's of a vanishing breed: the soul singers who were actually performing in the 1960s. As he sings on "Soul Survivor": "I remember 1965/Everybody was still alive."

8. The time I saw him, his fly was open!
Sweetwater's, Amsterdam Ave., NYC, early '90s. An intimate enough setting that all could clearly see that the soul legend had failed to activate his zipper. I wanted to shout "WXYZ!" (Wilson, eXamine Your Zipper!)

Maybe more musicians should consider going zipperless. He was better live than most of 'em!

I was concerned the cause of death was going to be "exposure"

9. The death of this guy is sad enough to get me to respond. I had such
good times to this guy's music. And since I've known musicians all my life I can testify that if he had gotten royalties everytime some bar band did Midnight Hour or Mustang Sally (usually badly) he would have been a bizillionaire by now.

OHHHH. This is sad.

Dancing to his tunes was one of the marvels of my high school years.

Especially "Funky Broadway" :)

The man had Rockin' Soul DOWN!

15. LIving on in The Land of 1000 Dances. May have been his highest charting
45. An East LA group called Cannibal and the Headhunters did the song before Wilson did. At the time I was living just outside of San Antonio and the Cannibal version was the one that was always played on the radio.

Both versions were excellent. Wilson's was a lot funkier and upbeat and Cannibal's had a really driving beat with a heavy organ emphasis.

for the ages. one of the all-time greats...
went to high school with a girl who became known as Mustang Sally. She was everything the song implies...sexy, fun, a little reckless and often, a heartbreaker.

bought you a brand new Mustang
A-1965.
Now you come around signifying woman
you don't wanna let me ride...
