Poll question: Are the Boston Red Sox about to make a tremendous mistake?
Deal Awaits Pitcher's Approval

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. -- The Arizona Diamondbacks are close to making a deal to trade pitcher Curt Schilling to Boston. But no trade can become official until the pitcher waives his no trade clause, reports ESPN's Peter Gammons.

The five-time All-Star pitcher confirmed the tentative trade Monday to reporters outside his house as his children and dogs played in the yard. During the impromptu news conference, teammate Randy Johnson drove by in a pickup truck and yelled to reporters playfully, "You're blocking the street!"

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein and owner John Henry plan to fly out to Arizona on Tuesday night to meet with Schilling, who has to waive his no-trade clause to make the deal happen. The Red Sox asked the commissioner's office for permission to discuss a contract extension with Schilling, the pitcher said in a news conference at his Arizona house Monday night, a window that expires at 5 p.m. Friday.

4. Are you people serious?
He's a blue-chip stud who just turned 37, has the weird habit of pitching complete games (anyone old enough to remember them?) and will probably pitch for another 3-4 years at least. What, you think Casey Fossum is going to lead us to the promised land? You're the same crowd that didn't want to trade Trot Nixon for Sammy Sosa a couple of years ago.
The future is now, kids. 86 years is long enough.

5. What you said.
Jesus HAITCH Ker-ise. It would be a good deal if all they did was eat Schilling's contract just to keep it from going to the evil empire, let alone the innings he'll eat up next year for the Sox.

And they should make another money-imbalanced trade with Houston just to make SURE they sign Pettit.

6. Schilling wouldn't be a mistake
Heck, anything would be a better move than what Grady 'Effin Little did in game 7 of the ALCS.

7. No
Schilling and Pedro in the same rotation is highly dangerous.
Whether or not Pedro's shoulder can stay stitched on is the question; I do not worry about Schilling because he is a big dude. Pedro is just too little to be throwing the way he does....
Ugh, heartburn!! x(

12. great move
fossum is not a big league pitcher. I doubt he will be anytime soon. Lyon, see fossum. High heat, no movement.

the Minor leaguers originally named were Shoppach and Youkilis. I wouldn't part with those two for a 37 year old, but I would have traded Fossum three times already.

"I won't leave here without an extension," Schilling said. "I'm reading that I'm demanding three years. I've never demanded anything from anybody, but I will get a contract extension before I leave Arizona."

gotta love MLB Players. it's a non-demand, demand.

14. Perhaps they should reunite the '97 Phillies in Boston
Bring in Francona, Schilling, maybe see if Rico Brogna will come back. Is Micky Morandini still available? How about Chad Ogea?

16. On balance...
It's a mixed move.

Schilling will be valuable to Boston for this upcoming season only. After that, I'd be shocked if the Sox were to get 12 wins from him. He's definately going downhill, but for one season, I think they could still squeeze some magic out of him.
