Charlize Theron is new Bond girl
http://news.webindia123.com/news/showdetails.asp?id=181937&cat=Entertainment

London | December 05, 2005 5:15:06 PM IST

Oscar-winning South African actress Charlize Theron is to play the new Bond girl in the upcoming remake of a Bond classic, Britain's Daily Mirror reported Monday.

The attractive 30-year-old has been offered a lucrative deal to star opposite new Bond actor, Britain's Daniel Craig, in the remake of "Casino Royale", the Mirror reported.

Filming is scheduled to start January in Prague.

If the report is confirmed, Theron would follow in the footsteps of former Bond girls such as Halle Berry, Teri Hatcher and Ursula Andress.

1. And the Bond series continues its graceful slide into the shitter.
How sad.

2. What makes this news "into the shitter"?
It sounds like the news you could have for any other release. In fact, the 'Bond girls' are tending to be better actresses than in the past.

4. When they made Halle Berry a Bond girl, they killed the series.
Historically, the Bond women have been British actresses. It's bad enough that we have a blond James Bond.

16. Except Ursula Andress
Swiss, in "Dr. No"; Daniela Bianchi in "From Russia With Love" (admittedly dubbed by a British actress); Claudine Auger in "Thunderball"; Mie Hama in "You Only Live Twice"; Jill St. John in "Diamonds Are Forever"; Britt Ekland in "The Man with the Golden Gun"; etc. (I'm getting bored).

Yeah, a fine historical record there.

another non-british bond girl.

Frankly, I think Charlize Theron is a goddess. :loveya:

36. And in this case the character of Vesper Lynd is British
IIRC. Never saw the spoof, but read the novel a long time ago.

Sent by MI6 to assist Bond, actually a double agent for SMERSH. I'm not giving anything away, cause I'm sure the producers are going to update the story to 2006.

41. The "end" of the Cold war is what "killed" Bond
As long as the iron Curtain was still up, there was a teensy bit of plausibility..

Bond should have ended when Connery quit:)

9. The serious revamp of Casino Royale hasn't even been made yet.
Too early to criticize, and I gather the production staff is going back to the roots with this one (thank God).

Still, when a 'news' article puts Hatcher and Berry in the same boat as Andress, one has to wonder... (Andress being, by far, the best of the three...)

Edited on Mon Dec-05-05 11:33 AM by DS1
A) Bond was in the shitter, flushed, processed, and turned into the plastic that holds your Pepsi YEARS ago

B) She's the ONLY Bond girl in over a decade with any sort of range, or acting talent.

3. They need to not remake classic bond movies. Especially whacky
ones like this. They can't touch the original. And they don't have actors that can pull it off like they did then.

5. Why Casino Royale?
It was a spoof of the Bond movies, and not a particularly good one. Cant they get a decent writer to make a new film?

7. The original Bond book was Casino Royale
and it's never been made as a serious film (I don't remember anything in the spoof linking up to the book). So making it now seems like a good idea to me.

11. It was a tv movie for CBS in 1956, I believe... maybe 1957.
But it's had no serious film treatment and they are going back to the roots.

I hope it works.

14. Casino Royale, the movie
was a Bond spoof, the novel by Ian Fleming, on the other hand, was true to the Bond genre and the book was 1st (1953 for the book v 1967 for the movie). One of the reasons Casino Royale(movie) was a spoof is that Broccoli couldn't obtain the rights to this book (and I think it was the only Bond book he couldn't get the rights to)

20. Plus there were 3 directors of the original, which is why it feels
like 3 different movies. At least one died (maybe 2) and they all had a really different take on it. Fascinating movie, I love it!

6. Albert Broccoli was the real force behind the Bond series, but he's dead
The Bond "magic" was buried with Albert Broccoli when he died, the same as Star Trek's was when Roddenberry died.

Has she become an American citizen? If not then she would just be an African or better yet, South African since she is from the country of South Africa.

I guess they didn't want the Bond Girl to be tough. They wanted her to be a whimpering nincompoop.

Oh well.

just my opinion. As someone who loved the bond series as an adolescent, as a grownup, I find the treatment of women adolescent.

27. I agree.
I guess I'm saying the Bond series is an artifact of previous attitudes that SHOULD no longer be in play. I can watch an old bond movie, and appreciate it in its chronisitic context, but Bond movies made NOW should know better.

42. "in the upcoming remake of a Bond classic"
Please...the movie was not a "Bond classic".

The book, maybe, but not the Niven movie.

I do not consider a spoof a "classic".

On Theron...we'll see (as we will on a blond Bond)...
