Incorrect usage of Vocabulary: Journalist edition

from today's story about Wendie Jo Sperber:

"and who in his words became 'a walking inspiration' after she contracted cancer, has died."

contracted: To acquire or incur: contract obligations; contract a serious illness.

One does not "acquire cancer" like you do a cold or the flu, it grows from within you. Cancer develops.

Note to "journalists:" please stop indiscriminately using thesauruses just for the sake of having a different word.
