What did you think of the BIG houses on 60 minutes?
Yes, they were ridiculous. What do you do with all that money? I couldn't imagine living in a hotel of 15,000 sq feet.

1. 15 THOUSAND?
Eek. We're a family of 3 living in about 900 sf. I'd like to have maybe 1200, so we could have a real office space, but... I can't imagine having 10 times that. I'd turn 12,500 of it into a climbing gym ;)

2. Oh it would be nice to have a home
of 2-3000 sq feet if you are a family, but you had to have seen these homes. I'm single and my apt is 550 sq feet! There master bathroom was larger.

3. I can't even imagine...
I mean, I can think up a lot of things I'd love to have in my home (not kidding about some climbing space!) but I don't know that I could come up with that much space's worth, and even if I could, I'd feel guilty as shit about owning/heating/whatever-ing it, unless I was using it in charitable ways or something.

But 2000? Yeah, I'd take that someday :)

5. I don't have a problem with the homes
But I sincerely hope the self-serving bungholes who had them built as testimonies to their asshattery die very soon. :grr:

6. they deserved their tax cuts
I only caught the end of it. Did they say what these people did to get their money? I'm just glad they got their well deserved tax cuts so they could get this economy on fire!

Peace

11. They never said
they were mostly young,40-50's. It wasn't only the size of the homes. How they finished it. The paint job in the master suite cost them thousands.

16. Most of them seemed to have most of their taste in their mouths
Nouveau Riche..all of them.. They are trying to BUY class and breeding. Can't be done..Reminds me of the women who buy a fake designer purse at a swap meet.. the only people who are impressed are people who cannot tell it's a fake...not the people they are trying to ijmpress. the moneyed class KNOWS it's a fake, and laugh behind their backs.

The house with several garish styles was a mishmash and not that attractive.. I guess if you like living in a soap opera set it's ok..

8. THAT WAS FASCINATING
I thought all of them were too large. Wasteful. I mean it's nice to have space, but geez. Can you imagine the air conditioning bills on those places. I kept thinking of them in terms of needlessly screwing up the environment and wasting energy for their pride and showing off. (But big kitchens I really like)

Think about THAT for comparison.

10. My favorite part was ...
My favorite part was when the one man in describing his wooden floors said he wanted them to be like the " Versailles House " and the reporter corrected him and said " you mean palace " - ok back on topic - those houses were just too damn big and sadly , they are going to get bigger . Its a mine is bigger than yours mentality .

12. Back to my original thought
What the hell do you need with 15,000 sq feet? I undersatnd 5,000 if you do a lot of busniess entertaining...who needs their own indoor volley ball court. It is such a waste.

And like I was thinking while watching it " WTF is the point ? " - they just have it because they want it . And the houses don't really look at all that good - its all about the price tag . There was one woman saying how she wanted her kitchen to be bigger . I think my living room could fit into her kitchen at least 2 times - some people are never satisified .

...the needy. But I'm a commie, so you're probably asking the wrong guy...;-)

15. It's happened before
A lot of huge single family homes were bought up for pennies on the dollar once or twice before, and then converted into boarding houses/apartments..

When the paychecks stop, so do the house payments and property taxes.:(

My son's house payment is more than what my husband MAKES in a month.. (not a McMansion...a small 1950's house in Concord CA)

When the depression was raging, my grandfather (who did not believe in banks) had money and property. he was offered and turned down a HUGE marble building in town. It was later turned into a civi center of sorts. It had been the masonic Temple..Have no idea of the actual footage, but it was bigger than the biggest bank in town.. He could have bought it for $5000.00..

The Masonic Center has recently been placed on the National Registry of Historical Places. The Directors (one appointed by each of the five major organizations) are working diligently to join the Greater Salina Community Foundation in an effort to make contributions to the Masonic Center tax deductible. Those funds will be set up very soon and persons wanting to make tax deductible donations for the Masonic Center will be able to do so. As soon as those accounts are set up the Directors of the Masonic Center will make an announcement on how to make those types of contributions.
