Any Johnny Cash Fans Here?
Edited on Sat Nov-26-05 01:00 PM by Mobius
"Walk the Line" was so good, I can't even BEGIN to express that.
However I have been a die hard fan since I was 4, and he was pretty much the only artist I liked on Hee Haw as my family sat down to watch it when I was a child.
I am an avid LIVE JOURNAL user, so I decided to create a Johnny Cash Community.
You don't HAVE to have a Live Journal account, but if you want to make your own posts, you need to join, and anonymous entries are screened.
I'd love to see some DUers there!

2. It was great
Joaquin Phoenix doesn't look much like Cash, but he sure did capture his essence, and sang too. I had to do a double take during the concert at Folsom scene he sounded so much like him. Great movie, and he deserves an Oscar for this one, no question. No movie could ever do justice to Cash's life, but this one came as close as anyone possibly could. And Johnny approved of Phoenix too, before his death, and that's good enough for me.

35. I'm often amazed when people say
they don't like country music, but they do like Johnny Cash.

Johnny Cash IS country music. The real country music, not this Shania Twain-Toby Keith-SheDaisy watered-down pap that passes for country music these days.

8. I admit I was a "snob" about him until recently.
When "American IV: The Man Comes Around" came out, I was transformed.

No, I was saved!

And now I'm exploring his back-catalogue. Pretty great stuff.

And what gets more "liberal" than this?

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black

11. And Best Actress
As good As Phoenix is, Reese Witherspoon is better. As one review I read said, "She's a revelation." She'll get a nomination, but probably won't get the Oscar, even though she should win. Just wonderful.

26. Sorry you feel that way, but they at least deserve nominations
Both Phoenix and Witherspoon were just terrific, playing roles that are definitely out of their "oeuvre". Witherspoon should be offered a recording contract. Her singing voice is better than 80% of all popular female country artists today.

28. I'm rather surprised you say that, as both have great track records
as actors. Both have done some great performances before. Phoenix deserved a nomination for "To Die For," and Witherspoon for "Election." Even when the script is weak, they have both done good jobs. In "Walk the Line," however, they really show their acting chops.

And, in their personal lives that are always made so public by the press, neither has ever done anything nasty or bizarre (ala Tom Cruise, J-Lo, etc.).

42. I agree with the anti-Reese post.
Edited on Mon Nov-28-05 10:37 PM by StellaBlue
I even LIKE Reese, but she's just playing the same plucky, perky character as usual, only using her natural Tennessee accent this time. It was good, she was good - but not Oscar material by a longshot. Phoenix was, though, I think - though I think he was even better in Gladiator and was robbed.

Overall, good movie. Four stars out of five. Worth going to see in the theater.

17. He is still an inspiration to me...like this song he recorded
(not sure who wrote it)

The Ballad Of Ira Hayes

CHORUS:
Call him drunken Ira Hayes
He won't answer anymore
Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war

Gather round me people there's a story I would tell
About a brave young Indian you should remember well
From the land of the Pima Indian
A proud and noble band
Who farmed the Phoenix valley in Arizona land
Down the ditches for a thousand years
The water grew Ira's peoples' crops
'Till the white man stole the water rights
And the sparklin' water stopped
Now Ira's folks were hungry
And their land grew crops of weeds
When war came, Ira volunteered
And forgot the white man's greed

CHORUS:
Call him drunken Ira Hayes
He won't answer anymore
Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war

There they battled up Iwo Jima's hill,
Two hundred and fifty men
But only twenty-seven lived to walk back down again
And when the fight was over
And when Old Glory raised
Among the men who held it high
Was the Indian, Ira Hayes

CHORUS:
Call him drunken Ira Hayes
He won't answer anymore
Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war

Ira returned a hero
Celebrated through the land
He was wined and speeched and honored; Everybody shook his hand
But he was just a Pima Indian
No water, no crops, no chance
At home nobody cared what Ira'd done
And when did the Indians dance

CHORUS:
Call him drunken Ira Hayes
He won't answer anymore
Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war

Then Ira started drinkin' hard;
Jail was often his home
They'd let him raise the flag and lower it
like you'd throw a dog a bone!
He died drunk one mornin'
Alone in the land he fought to save
Two inches of water in a lonely ditch
Was a grave for Ira Hayes

CHORUS:
Call him drunken Ira Hayes
He won't answer anymore
Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war
Yeah, call him drunken Ira Hayes
But his land is just as dry
And his ghost is lyin' thirsty
In the ditch where Ira died

39. Peter LaFarge wrote The Ballad of Ira Hayes.
Bobdylanroots.com has some background. This is a fine site that tells the story behind Dylan's "cover" tunes--& his "originals" that strongly resembled other songs.

www.bobdylanroots.com/laf.html

Townes van Zandt also played The Ballad of Ira Hayes.

Used to sing this in college.

I'll pull the twine.

20. You will love this story....
My son, my neice, and I were going to see a movie in Nashville, and after we parked the car, I noticed everyone in the parking lot was staring at someone. As it turned out, it was Johnny and John Carter walking through the parking lot to their car. They were walking towards us, and everyone was looking at him, on all sides of them, and he was just ignoring everyone. But as we got really close, he looked at me, and said, "Hi, how are you?" Well, my son was beside himself. (He was about 12 at the time.) He kept saying, "He said hello to you, Mom! He didn't say anything to anyone else, but he said hello to you!" To this day, I don't know why he spoke to me, but it is a nice memory to share with my son. (And BTW, he and John Carter got in their Mercedes and pulled up to the front of the theatre to pick up June...she had gone to the bathroom.)

30. A recent appreciation
I never cared much for country music. Recently, I've grown to appreciate Johnny Cash's work (though I still can't stand Ring of Fire - sorry, folks). A while back I was reading a biography of Elvis. It mentioned that Elvis and Johnny Cash, in their earliest days, began recording at the Sun (?) studio around the same time. In the end, Elvis is remembered as a circus act. While Johnny Cash is revered with much respect.

that means "Johnny" only talked about some of the things he did, rather than show them and have people lose sympathy for him. He drug problems didn't exactly end when he married June, neither. He did come around though. That's my only complaint about the film. The two leads were incredible and, regardless of what you think of Reese, I would have to say she's the frontrunner for Oscar this year. Her performance had a sheen to it that seems Oscar-worthy.

Couldn't they have performed "Ring of Fire" from beginning to end? Where was "A Boy Named Sue?" In the Folsum Prison concert, that song gets the biggest cheer from the crowd.

38. I'm a lifelong Johnny Cash fan--
my parents were country music fans and that's what I grew up listening to. I was very dubious about Joaquin & Reese doing their own vocals in this film. It took me all of about 15-20 minutes to warm up to the two of them in those roles. Neither looks that physically much like the people they are portraying but they have their mannerisms just nailed. And the film works whether your a country music fan or not. A friend of mine isn't, didn't know that much about Johnny or June and saw the film and loved it too. Don't cheat yourself out of seeing a good film because you don't think these two can do their parts justice-they do, and then some.
