Seriously I should skip my classes today...
Edited on Wed Nov-23-05 05:54 AM by Wetzelbill
I have one lecture, which probably will consist of nothing important. Hardly anybody is going to show up.

Then I have a Health Care Class from 4 pm to 5:15. The afternoon before Thanksgiving. Yeah, lots of people are going to show up for that. Yesterday my Tribal Govt class had so few people in it we just sat around BSed for a while then left early.

I'm seriously thinking about just kicking back and not wasting my time. I just know I'll show up for that last one and he'll let us go because so few people will be there. I just know it.

:: sigh :: I know I'm going to waffle back and forth on this all day. Should I or shouldn't I? Yes I should....... but on the other hand....

I'll know what I'll do when the time comes. And, then I'll wish I went with the other alternative. I can't win.

Oh yes, I should add, missing either one carries no penalty for me either way in terms of attendance. So that isn't a factor.

However, my pure laziness is a major factor in this decision. :)

1. No penalties? Day before Thanksgiving?
Screw it! Take off and have some fun. Do what all of us poor working folk are desperately wishing we could do but can't. And while you're at it, have some fun for us.

2. When I was a TA, I would always give some extra credit
or hints for the exam on the days that students were unlikely to come (day before Thanksgiving).

3. well, here is the thing....
One class is a lecture which isn't all that important in context to the tests. The book and a general review before our tests are the most important things And, really our TA doesn't know jack about what goes on the tests, so he can't help me there.

And, in the other class, our professor gives us a shitload of sample questions for our tests on our course website. The are all multiple choice and he uses those to make up our tests. So if I just wade through those beforehand, memorize the answers, about half of those exact questions are on the test. Plus, in terms of his material for today, he puts all his powerpoint presentations online too. Other than that the big thing I have to do in that class is write a 15-20 page paper. So there is no downside in missing class today, other than I just probably should go because I should try to attend class as much as possible.

5. Go!
The last lecture before my astrophysics exam was the one where the tutor gave us the exam questions. 5 of us turned up... They know how to spot the keen students....

7. one class I already know the exam questions
the Prof just gives them to us.

The other the TA doesn't even know them and our professor damn sure won't give them up. Actually, check that. I already know those too, because our last exam is cumlative and only uses questions that we have already had on other tests. I still may go to that one anyway though. If you saw her you would know why... :)

13. College classes on the day before Thanksgiving?
WOW! I thought university/college students had more of a holiday than that. We turned our little munchkins loose yesterday and we do not have to return until Monday.

Cut the class. Go for it.

As an official, tenured faculty member I grant you permission to take the day off.

I can write you a pass if you would like, lol.

14. yes! You are awesome!
I may need one.

Actually, isn't it bizarre that they didn't let us out a little earlier. It's completely nuts. I didn't fully realize tomorrow was even Thanksgiving, I thought it was later on, since class is still going on. Isn't it always on a Thursday though? I should know I just never pay attention to stuff like that.

15. I have not had a long weekend/vacation
since school began on 1 August, so I was definitely aware that today was my first day off.

What is even more amazing: Usually attendance is down on the Monday and Tuesday prior to Thanksgiving in my school as the majority of my students' families are from somewhere else and they travel. But, I only had two absences out of 59 for these two days.

It was really hectic for me yesterday as I had to have the mid-term grades in before I left. So I just showed videos on German history for two days and my upper-level class watched episodes of Futureama in German so I could get my work completed and leave.

16. oh that's a good method
show some videos while you do work. Nicely planned out.

Oh you are in need of a good break then. No doubt. You better take advantage of it, kick back and enjoy yourself.

So what are your plans anyway? I'm probably going to go eat with one of my friends. He's from the same reservation as I am in MT. His family usually comes down to visit but this year they aren't, and I usually would have Thanksgiving with my younger brother but he lives in MT again. So looks like my friend and I might chow down together. My Uncle lives down here now too, so he and my Aunt want me to do something with them too. So that is my other option. :)

17. Spending time with the family
We are all in the same city for the first time in about ten years. My sister just returned and is treating us all tomorrow evening to a repast in her new house.

Otherwise, I'm just going to kick back, read, watch some TV and maybe try out some more photography (lately I've been using a combo technique with my camera and passive light intensifier for night pics). Or... I can go in search of a tall, bad woman with tattoos and a foreign accent, lol.

Here is a pic of the moon from a few nights back. I think I caught a UFO in orbit.

18. that is a seriously cool pic
I'm trying to think if I know any tall women with foreign accents. I used to know this one in Seattle. Her name was Anne or Anna I think and she was French. Actually I knew another one too, her name was Kirstie and she was from Zimbabwe via London. Pretty attractive women too. In a rare ballsy moment I was sitting a computer lab next to Kirstie and I just leaned over and asked her out. She said yes. Then I got the flu, cancelled our date and we never ended up getting together. Yep, I screwed that up, lol.

So, any accent in particular?

I see. I too have dabbled in the techniques of cunning linguistics, however my native tongue lapping is much more selective then most practitioners of this art.

23. it's always that damn nerd isn't it?
I wrestle with my inner nerd everyday. And, considering he is really scrawny, has asthma and couldn't whip his way out of a wet paper bag, I shouldn't have such a tough time defeating him.

I totally lost myself on that one.

So did I ever tell you that I've missed you these last few months? Just checkin'. :)

30. well that is true
we were talking in my Tribal Government class yesterday about education being a credential. That students really don't want to have to think critically, they just want to show up, do whatever little work they can and get their degree. Because they need that credential, not necessarily because they want to learn as much as they possibly can from the classes. I was thinking the whole time, that many of my classes, I don't really learn a lot in. That I actually learn more as an auto-didact, reading several papers a day, looking through LBN, reading the latest books etc. But in order to fully be recognized as an expert in my field and be eligible to apply for certain jobs, I need to have that degree. Yet, I learn more in my off school time then I actually do at school. Funny world we live in, huh? :)

32. Why would you put yourself through that?
The empty room, the long uncomfortable silences from the four of you in the room when a question gets asked, the paper shuffling and the cold echo of a binder clasp snapping open, the professor's lame jokes and/or rant about nobody showing up, the having to get out of your jammies...There's no reason to torture yourself like that if you don't need to.

36. Nothing wrong with a bit of pure laziness once in a while.
Read a book titled "How to be Idle" (I forget the author's name)...it's damned funny and quite reassuring to those of us who are unenergetic at times.

Look at me, for example: I have a monster project that's going to require about eight days of work that's due in five days, and here I am on DU...but I'm thinking about the project and planning it while I'm typing, at least.

too. I'll start it next week. Take me a few days of research and writing. That's the gift and the curse of being blessed with writing skills. I can half ass something and still get an A. The procrastination gets brutal though.
