PHOENIX Carpool lanes look enticing, especially during rush hour traffic. But if there's only one person in the car, it's illegal to drive in them during certain times. But what if you're pregnant? A Phoenix, Arizona woman is asking that question.
Candace Dickinson was driving to work last week when she was stopped by a Phoenix police officer for driving in the carpool lane. When the officer asked her how many people in the vehicle, he got an unexpected answer. “I said two, and he said no there's one, I said no there's two, myself and my son I'm pregnant," Dickinson said.
It's something she says she's done everyday for the last nine-months. But her reasoning didn't keep her from getting a ticket.
Phoenix police say the officer did the right thing. Arizona law states the lanes are for two people. They say an exclusion for pregnant women would be difficult to enforce. "What's to say a woman doesn't put a stuffed pillow under he shirt and say she's pregnant. There's no way to tell this," said Officer Perry Sills of the Phoenix Police Department.
