Goliath's name found in archaeological dig By Allyn Fisher-Ilan
Sun Nov 13,10:19 AM ET

An Israeli researcher said he has made a Goliath of a find -- the first archaeological evidence suggesting the biblical story of David slaying the Philistine giant actually took place.

A shard of pottery unearthed in a decade-old dig in southern Israel carried an inscription in early Semitic style spelling "Alwat and "Wlt," likely Philistine renderings of the name Goliath, said Aren Maeir, who directed the excavation.

"This is a groundbreaking find," he said of the rust-colored ceramic. "Here we have very nice evidence the name Goliath appearing in the Bible in the context of the story of David and Goliath ... is not some later literary creation."

6. Shard proves very little.
That shard was dated to a time approximately 1000 years after the events in the biblical story. (Hardly an eye-witness accounting). This shard does confirm that someone wrote that name on a piece of pottery at that point in time. It also proves that this story may be that old. It does absolutely nothing to confirm that the "story" is based on a real event.

Who knows, perhaps the author of that name on that shard had a big dog named Goliath, the name, an inspiration from a thousand year old tale, was then put on the dogs feeding dish. That shard might be from that feeding dish... (I realize that it is a safe bet that this shard did not originate from a doggy bowl but you get the idea).

I suspect that there may be a bit of religious bias in any who believe otherwise, ie: if this shard reflects the names of biblical folks then those folks must have existed. If that is so then it must follow that other biblical stories are true, lucky me, I am a member of that religion and I now have a confirmation that my religion is based in reality.
