Australians told to forget Skippy and put a 'roo on the barbie'

Australians are being urged to start eating more kangaroos, defying a traditional reluctance to tuck into a national icon.

The continent is home to millions of kangaroos and wallabies but for decades Australians have been averse to eating them, partly because of sentimental reasons - what some call the "Skippy factor".

Restaurants will be urged to use more kangaroo meat

The fact that a kangaroo graces the country's coat of arms - opposite an emu - has also dissuaded many Australians from tossing a 'roo steak on the barbie. To many people it seems somehow wrong.

3. Kangaroo is really tasty & pretty healthy to boot.
Plus farmers just kill millions of them every year, which is a huge waste of food.
