Not a joke for the masses. It's along the same lines as the old classic: There are 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

It's just an obscure bit of math that most people will never need to know.

8. Yeah, but how many programmers does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
None. That's a hardware issue.

19. Funny you should post this cuz my techie hubby was all pleased with
himself the other day, showing this same joke to his other computer geeky friends. It totally went over my head, but whatever. :)

20. Microbiologists/Virologists are worse.
I dated one last year. I went to a faculty party with her, and jokes were along the lines of: Q: How many nonidentifiable protiens does it take to screw in a lightbulb? A: None! The results of this work imply that the parapoxvirus causing contagious ecthyma in Norwegian semi-domesticated reindeer belongs to the species orf virus and that the orf virus crosses the host species barrier from sheep and goat to semi-domesticated reindeer. At which point the forty or so mictrobiologists in the room would burst into hysterical laughter.
