2. If you stay in midtown manhattan
you will pay through the nose for anything ($300-500).

Suggest you find something on the west side, mid 70's - mid 90's streets.

6. Hotel Pennsylvania
right across from Madison Square Garden/Penn Station. I stayed there the times I was coming to NYC to check out apartments and interview for jobs, before I moved here.

They have deals on occasion. Of course, stay away from the deluxe and/or trendy hotels like the Gansevoort, the Tribeca Grand, etc.

7. The Chelsea Hotel
is not just a hotel, it's a piece of history. Fun place to stay. Very much of an experience. Warning: not your standard hotel. :D

9. We love The Lucerne.
I think it is on about 80th street and Amsterdam. Wonderful little hotel with a European flair. Comfortable rooms, some junior suites. We always stay there when we go to NYC, except this time, when we go at Thanksgiving, we couldn't get in.

10. THE BEST
The Hyatt in Jersey City. It is built out into the Hudson. Amazing skyline, and an easy hop over via PATH or water taxi. On the right you have Lady Liberty, on the left the GW bridge. Great restaurant with full windows of the view.

Takes you maybe 10 mins (except at rush) to get to the financial district.

Jersey City is pretty blighted now, but this place is a gem.
