I finally got vmware to install!
I needed to install SuSE's source code, 184MB worth, not included by default and change the autoconf.h file to reflect the name of my kernel (2.40.20-4GB-athlon instead of 2.40.20-4GB)

However, and maybe I need to spend some time tinkering, out-of-the-box, vmware is slower at disk access than win4lin is. win4lin seems to run at native Win9x speed whereas it's taking forever to copy files in win2k's initial text-based setup mode.

But, it works.

2. It finally got through the text-install phase and now the GUI
The GUI aspect seems to be running quite a bit faster, somehow. It's not native Win2k speed, but it works.

I also managed to install a screensaver looking for files in paths that did not exist. I had to download the glu.h OpenGL source file from the net, but I got it to work as well.

It's not the toddleresque simplicity of Windows, but all in all Linux is very much worth the extra tinkering.

As you can probably tell from my avatar I'm a big GNU/Linux fan and I agree that it is worth the extra effort. For my purposes at least, it's the only machine (apart from my delicious Amiga) that I need.

Out of curiosity, what do you need vmware for? I expect that there's some piece of Windows software that you absolutely have to have, but I'm anxious to know what it is.

5. Amiga too?
:D Love that Commodore... I imagine you use the UAE emulator? ;-)

Winbloat apps I want to try under emulation:

Adobe Premiere 6
UltraFractal
Adobe Photoshop Elements 2
Ulead PhotoImpact 8

Technically, I can live without the need for Winbloat emulation, but it's the configuration experience I want - especially if more industries switch to Linux (the SCO lawsuit against IBM is baseless).

The install of WinBloat 2000 Professional had slowed significantly during its h/w detection process (the CD active light still came on but it was slow) so I'm trying again. I should check the DMA settings of my CD drives as well.

4. And what do you need vmware to do
that WINE doesn't?

6. Adobe apps, mainly
WINE does work, but it's a bit more finicky to set up apps with - and many have found the installation of apps easier to accomplish by installing via an actual emulator and then configuring in WINE afterward. I had problems with FrontPage 2002... (until I get a grip on a good WYSIWYG web page editor, I'm sticking with FrontPage - even though I do know HTML and some JavaScript and CSS, carpal tunnel makes programming difficult on a continuous basis.)

Since my "Amiga too?" reply, the reboot of the emulator has worked, the install is cruisin' by. Vmware is not that bad... I think that when all is installed, it'll run at a decent speed...
