4. huh
the batlith(sp?) eh.

I like smaller, elegant swords, myself. And they say it ain't the weapon, but the warrior. ;)

5. Here is hand made wood sword I want from Little Raven Studios
made from hickory. My current metal sword is not too special. I had the same sword as you only in black and sold it.

Have bought several antique Jians on Ebay but still haven't found "the one". Would love one with shagreen sheath and handle.

6. wow very nice!
I have a very poor cheapo wood replica - but that looks beautiful. Hmmm... bet that isn't cheap! ;)

My h. has a metal sword a friend ordered for him in China and my teacher has several that he has ordered. One is similar to those the Chinese will use in the next Olympics.

here's another pic of a sword women... (they all seem to be a little too well endowed, shall we say)

27. wasters?
Edited on Wed Oct-12-05 04:56 PM by Lisa
I think that's the technical term. There are a couple of people who make and sell them on eBay, and they turn up under a search for "wooden sword" or "waster". A lot of the commercially-available ones are built for Eastern martial arts, but there are some places which sell ones made to look like other varieties:

Roman:
http://www.lawrensnest.com/gladius.html

Medieval European:
http://therionarms.com/reenact/blunt_swords_western.shtml

Some swords I've been coveting:

Lonely Mountain Forge Viking/Saxon type:
(I actually have their "basic" model already, minus the engraving and with a blunted tip for theatrical combat)

Kirby Wise:
(How's this for "gratuitous seax"?)

Albion 13th Century Knightly:
(And this might actually be within my price range! I used to have one of their La Tene Celtic blades, but gave it to a friend who does Chinese martial arts -- it was very similar in balance and hilt design to her kind of sword, and I wanted to give her a present that wasn't made in China, for a change!)

7. A few.
The claymore. It takes a strong man to weild one:

The rapier. Skill is required to use a pig-sticker:

The katana. You can slash or stab. Not so good for defense, however.

16. hey Jay
you mod man, you!

I held a Claymore at a recent Ren fest I went too. It was astonishingly heavy.

Ps. my teacher said that someone skilled in sword could take care of all of them with a clay- pipe. ;)

12. I love Tai Chi
I had a self defense instructor that used Tai Chi techniques in the warmups and in the drills that we did. Great stuff. He had the most powerful kicks and punches that I've ever seen, which he attributed to Tai Chi.

22. Masamune sword
perhaps the greatest sword maker in Japanese history -

from wikipedia -

Often, Muramasa's blades are described as bloodthirsty or evil while Masamune's are considered the mark of an internally peaceful and calm warrior. The most famous legend of the difference between the weapons of the two swordmakers is based on what happens when one of each sword is placed in a slow stream. Muramasa's sword was able to cut a leaf cleanly in half, while another leaf abruptly changed course and slid by Masamune's sword without touching it.

26. hmmm
I love the existential and spiritual perspective of swords and sword makers.

One of the great tai-chi sword masters said (sic), "a sword in one's hand brings unlimited happiness."
