Poll question: DUers... does my site upgrade cause problems for your browser?
Edited on Mon Oct-03-05 11:41 AM by brainshrub
I just upgraded my site's CMS and tweaked it. In the past, many people complained that the site layout looked off. (Especially people with Macs or those who use the Oprah Browser.)

Common complaints:

1) To much white-space at the up of the screen.
2) The text bleeds over the right side of the screen so that you have to scroll to the right to see it.

Please take a moment and take a look at my site, and tell me if it looks okay.

If you do have a problem, let me know what browser and OS you are using.

Thanks-in-advance for your help.

1. Well, it timed out and didn't load for me at all, using Firefox...
Edited on Mon Oct-03-05 11:01 AM by Misunderestimator
Also, tried it with IE... no go for me. IE errors with a message that it cannot find the site, while Firefox just times out.

3. Really? Try again.

I don't know why that would happen. I'm up-and-running.

Firefox is a great browser. It make me feel sorry for all the folks who still use IE.

5. Are you following the link, or typing the URL?
Sometimes DU times out for me, but when I refresh it comes up just fine.

This is weird.

7. Sorry, but no go... it just times out. Clicking the hyperlink or typing it
neither works.

8. Try this:
Try this:, and see if it comes up:

http://www.brainshrub.com/about

If that doesn't work, try without the "http://. Like this: http://brainshrub.com

Who is your Internet Service Provider?

9. Believe me, I've tried everything possible (edited again)
Edited on Mon Oct-03-05 11:53 AM by Misunderestimator
Doesn't load. (I'm in IT, so... all I can say is it don't work for me. I also tried it from my other laptop... and no go.)

Check your PM for the other info.

On edit... I did manage to get to it in a roundabout way from my work laptop. It came up with the URL to your site on the standard MSN search results when the site was not found.

Clicking on THAT hyperlink, for some reason worked.

Now... any method to get there works from that pc's browser, because it has the site in memory. This is really odd.

No wonder "The Man" doesn't want you to see my site.

6. no problem here. IE 6.0 and XP
You should ask for OS and browser even if it works fine to help detect any pattern of failure being an isolated case or not.

I know that was a terrible sentence but I am sure you get my drift. :-)

11. Doh! You're right.
Doh! You're right! I should have done that.

I don't know if I would have gotten any useful information, because not many DUers are bothering to answer the poll: According to my site-stats, about 30 DUers have visited my site since I asked the question. As of this post, only 3 of them bothered to vote, so I guess it wouldn't have mattered if I remembered to do that.

12. No white space, but text runs wide
Does your style sheet specify a narrow type font that I might not have, but you do? (Even resizing text to smaller, it still overruns the right margin of your layout.)

Good news, no white space at the top...

Safari 2.0.1 on Mac running OS 10.4.2

13. What would you suggest as a font?
I have had problems with formatting for Macs. (A shame, because I like macs.) What is a safe font for macs?

If I can't get this to work, I may just switch to an entirely new layout... something with a white background so the text can run as wide as it wants.

19. Ariel or Helvetica, generally
Edited on Mon Oct-03-05 02:47 PM by gmoney
Not sure if a plain white background would solve the L-R scrolling problem though. Isn't there a way to limit line width based on the pixel width of your background graphic?

FWIW on Mac IE, I get the blank space at the top... seems like the right hand content begins exactly where the left hand navbar column ends. Text runs wide, too. But IE is just a mess these days.

17. Opera 7.01, Windows XP
"About", "Resources", "Forum" & "Brainshrub Radio" are squished into a narrow column, as wide as "Brainshrub.com?". The homepage, however, is fine.

Nice content btw!

I looked at several pages without any trouble. Images load up right away. Good looking website design.
