Feel good movie suggestions - picking something up tonight
to watch with my Mother. Last time I asked I got some wonderful suggestions - can't remember the name of the movie but we watched a movie about a group of older women whose bus breaks down in the middle of nowhere in Canada. It was really marvelous. Another movie we enjoyed together was Don Juan DeMarco.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

3. No it's with Adam Sandler (who I can't stand) and Drew Barrymore
(who I absolutely LOVE) and he meets her but she is brain damaged from an auto accident and doesn't remember him each day when she meets him.

DO GET IT if you haven't seen it..

34. It's the only way to watch Sandler.
I don't know why, but when he's paired with Barrymore, he's really... well, great isn't the word, but "somewhat appealing" might apply. The rest of the time he's just an obnoxious ass (and a Repuke in real life).

43. If you're interested in 50 First Dates...
...I'd also suggest Along Came Polly (if you haven't already seen it). Same genre, but it's Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston. I thought it would suck, but I laughed a lot. Philip Seymour Hoffman tops it all off - he cracks me up in that movie.

51. Hank Azaria was a riot in that too.
"Luban! Look at me in my eyeball!"

Overall I didn't think it was great (but then, I cannot stand Jen Aniston)...but it did have some moments. As you say, Phil Hoffman just wonderful. Hank Azaria, great...Ben, good as always.

61. I loved The Wedding Singer.
It was the first time I saw Adam Sandler, and I had no idea how repulsive he normally is.

I also liked The Waterboy. Kathy Bates and Henry Winkler were good, and the movie was just plain silly fun for me.

5. Second 50 First Dates.
Edited on Sat Oct-01-05 10:57 AM by tjdee
I put off seeing this because I thought it was another stupid Adam Sandler movie (but I loved the Wedding Singer!). But they deal very realistically (well, as much as you can in a romcom) with the subject that arises, and the way Drew's family loves her, and the ending (oh! The ending made me cry, which is rare)....

Very sweet movie.

Rob Schneider's character got on my nerves though.

12. Yikes aside. It was a sweet, sometimes sad and gorgeous, film..
The quality of emotion it evoked was memorable. The way Depp char. had to resolve his childlike/creative inclinations in the face of being a "grown up" in uptight British Victorian society. I think it's one of Johnny's best films.

15. The movie you're thinking of is
"Strangers in Good Company."

Here are some other mother-friendly movies:

1. "Mrs. Brown"--Judi Dench stars as Queen Victoria and Billy Connolly as her servant John Brown, who became the most important man in her life after the death of Prince Albert. The exact nature of their relationship can only be guessed at, but there was plenty of gossip about it; hence the title of the movie.

2. "Shall We Dance"--The original Japanese version (I haven't seen the remake) is a delightful, and an accurate portrayal of how upper middle class people live.

3. "Clockwise"--An underrated British comedy in which John Cleese plays a pompous ass (what else?) of a schoolmaster whose entire life falls apart because he takes a wrong turn in a train station.

72. How could I have forgotten Shall We Dance?
I mean the Japanese version, of course, and not the American remake, which I haven't seen.

Everybody on this thread REALLY needs to see Shall We Dance? I saw it at a free preview when it first came out, and then I went back and took a friend of mine who is a dance instructor. He absolutely loved it and said the characters were exactly like the people he taught: "I could put a name to every one of them."

As much as anything, the movie is about the need for a creative outlet in life. I'll leave it at that. It is so utterly wonderful.

It's such a sweet, good, incredibly touching movie--I absolutely loved it.

I made myself rent it only because of the reviews, because the plot sounded soooo boooring, but I was absolutely riveted. Not because of the action, to say the least, but because of the people.

I couldn't recommend it more highly.

22. Because of Winn Dixie
this is the Amazon dot com review. I loved this film!!

Some people think "family entertainment" is an oxymoron, but even they might enjoy Because of Winn-Dixie. This straightforward story of a girl and her dog is simple without being simplistic, heartfelt without being sappy, and thoughtful without being ponderous. Opal (Annasophia Robb, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, who manages the near-impossible feat of being cute without being cutesy) can't make any friends in the small town of Naomi until she hooks up with a dog that's running loose in a supermarket. She spontaneously names him after the store and soon the dog is leading her into unexpected places--a pet store, where she meets an awkward musician (Dave Matthews); a library, where she meets a librarian with as many stories as books (Eva Marie Saint); and into a house shrouded with underbrush, where she meets a blind old woman who sees with her heart (Cicely Tyson). This could have been sentimental glop, but director Wayne Wang (Smoke, The Joy Luck Club) and a restrained script draw honest emotions from the actors and an eerie beauty from the Florida landscape; this one of the few family movies that captures the childhood sense that everyday life can be mystical. Also starring Jeff Daniels (The Purple Rose of Cairo, Something Wild) as Opal's minister father. --Bret Fetzer --This text refers to the Theatrical Release edition.

Waking Ned Devine is an Irish movie...utterly hilarious.

The Castle is a cute little Aussie film, more of a chuckly film rather than a 'wet seat' sort of comedy.

The aforementioned Amelie is another great choice.

Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant.

Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow

Mansfield Park with Frances O'Connor

Persuasion with Amada Root

Pride and Prejudice: two versions

1) 1940 B&W version with Greer Garson and Lawrence Olivier (looking his sexiest)

2) 1998 marathon (4-6 hours) BBC version starring Colin Firth as the incredibly sexy Mr. Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as the feisty Elizabeth Bennett. By far the best P&P adaptation, but best viewed over several nights.

71. You're thinking of Strangers in Good Company.
That's the one about the ladies on the bus in the middle of the Canadian countryside. Wonderful film!

Also life-affirming and worth seeing:

Crossing Delancey

Enchanted April

Room with a View

Marty

The Shop Around the Corner (see You've Got Mail for the updated version)

Born Romantic

Crazy from the Heart

Sense and Sensibility

Emma

Secrets and Lies (Yes, there's some pain here, but the emotional payoff is wonderful)

The Goodbye Girl

Italian for Beginners (Again, there's some heartbreak, but it all comes together so beautifully at the conclusion)

Agnes Browne (Ditto)

Only You (The Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei one)

Amelie

Persuasion
