Can anyone tell me which is better for downloading pics into while
you are travelling, and away from your computer?

A laptop....or an iPod photo?

1. Depends
Ipod is more portable of course. But the laptop may have more storage, be quicker, and have more display facility.

2. Thanks!
My girlfriend has an ipod, and she says that it holds thousands of pics.....

She showed it to me, and the display was comparable to that on a "normal" digital camera...

Of course, your points are well taken, and I thank you!

This would be for temporary storage till I got home...and portability is key.....

3. The other thing you could do is bring your digicam's memory card
to a photo developing center and have them put all the pics on CD-ROMs at full resolution.

4. Yes, that is true....
But the thing is...one thing I could not do on my Mediterranean trip this year was to download each day (no laptop or iPod), and that meant that there weren't any labels or dates on the pics when I got home...

If I can download them each day, then I can label and date them for future reference...much easier and nicer....

6. Just make sure your laptop does not
crap out on you... that happened to me. Now I make two copies, one on CD and one on HD.

7. Well the thing is, I do not have a laptop or an iPod....
That's why I asked my original question.....

I thank you for coming by, however! If I do ever have a laptop, I will definitely remember your good ideas......

21. Don't worry about it, Peggy
We'll load them to my iBook and then burn a CD for you to take home.

23. Cool!
That will be good for when I visit you....but since you don't plan on travelling with me on future trips...Or do you? Hmmmmm.......

Then what?

24. Future trips?
well....

But for the time being my laptop will work fine. Of the suggestions presented for the future, a memory stick seems like the best answer. They are very compact and hold a lot. The other way to go is get several flash cards. Dragging along a laptop when you are traveling is a nuisance. And (just my personal opinion) iPods are worthless.

5. I use a laptop, usually because I have it anyways.
I've also seen little portable hardrives with a camera interface, but an ipod would be cooler than those.

8. As you can see upthread, I don't have either one....
My friend's iPhoto was about the size of a deck of cards, and had a lot of useful features....

Storing pics was just one of its features...it looked really useful..and so much more portable than a laptop.....

I'm really leaning towards having one...

Then I could download songs for the gym...hmmmm....

9. I forgot to say a laptop with a CD burner...
That greatly decreases my odds of losing the pictures. I could mail the CDs home if I wanted too. I've also used it to make CDs for friends.

But you could also transfer stuff from the ipod to someone else's computer, and yeah, songs for the gym.

I know it's not a helpful offering, but:

It worked for my parents in 1956:

16. Well, there, good morning to you, my dear OldLeftieLawyer!
A memory stick? You mean lots of memory in the camera? I already have that...

But the main reason for my original question is: When I'm travelling, it is a very good thing to be able to download the pics I took each day. When I can do that, it seems to me that then I can label them with the date, location and etc...So I need a place to download them into...hence the question about which appliance would be better for this application.

I was JUST thinking about you, before you came along...saw you in some other thread...how funny is that!

Thanks for coming by, BTW......

17. If you download them into a iPod,
Edited on Wed Sep-21-05 10:33 AM by crispini
it's just like downloading them into a memory stick. I very seriously doubt you could label them with the date, location, etc. through the iPod interface ... although I don't *have* an iPod (YET), so I don't know for sure, but I do know that ... iPods don't have keyboards.

I'm also not entirely sure you can download them from a camera directly to an iPod. You'd have to make sure that you had all the right cables and etc.

Here are the official Apple iPod pages, have a look.

19. My goodness, you're up early......
And so bright-eyed and bushytailed, it makes me just sort of numb.

Nice, though.

Your photo program on your computer will show you the date and time of the pictures (mine does, anyway), and if you just make a note of where you are on each day, won't that suffice?

Someone said something about taking it to a photo store and having your pictures put on a CD or a DVD. Sounds like an idea to me, but as for the notations you want to make, I'll wager you can do it mostly from memory when you get home.

You are so sweet .........................

20. My dear OldLeftyLawyer.......
Me? Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed? Hmmmm.......no, I'm not, really...

I think I'll be in touch with you, and let you know what all is going on in my life right now...It ain't pretty, sister....I'm basically numb these days...and that's on the good days......

I appreciate your photo/iPod comments as well...

I must investigate the iPod photo further to get the answers I need and want...
