Parker's eyes are finally opened
I can't believe what I've just read! The consistently right-leaning cheerleader for the Bush administration, Kathleen Parker, penned a most cogent criticism of the president's lethargic, emotionally vapid response to the devastation caused by Katrina.
Her final comment, however, "Bush may have revealed a truer self than we were meant to see," only reveals her own blindness to what many of us have known since we first heard him speak.
Mr. Bush does not have the intelligence or thoughtfulness to lead this country effectively. From his butchering of the English language, to his inability to see shades of gray in policy decisions, to the inadequate planning and funding to carry out these decisions, only those with ideological blinders on have failed to see "the truer self" that the president presents.
The most powerful office in the world should be held by an extraordinary person with an extraordinary mind who can lead and challenge us to end our reliance on fossil fuels; truly improve our schools by attracting, training, paying and honoring great teachers; understand the difference between science and religion and advocate the appropriate role of both.
