Does anyone understand how difficult it is to lose weight whilst
being constantly in a state of anxiety and depression?

How damned guilty I feel everytime I prepare a meal or snack and see the poor people ravaged by whatever on TV and the smugness of those who are in power doing nothing good with their power?

I'm gonna throw all the damned food out of my house and turn off the computer and tv.

I'm totally out of control. There's too much stuff going on - both world-wide and in my personal life as well.

DAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT

2. I quit smoking and went on a diet at the same time
I've been smoke free for 6.5 weeks and I've lost 17 pounds. So it can be done. I work out every day though. Walking and lifting weights. I walk for an hour a day at 3.5 mph.

4. Watch tennis
Don't watch the news on TV. I know you're doing things to help the homeless and displaced. You'll just drive yourself mad if you keep watching this stuff.

I'm watching tennis until the confirmation hearings start on Tuesday. Although those might make me angry, I still want to watch them; they're historic, and I guess I have even more of an interest now due to my chosen career.

9. I have been eating crap all week after doing so well for the last
month. I am totally out of control and I bet it is all of the bad news, depression and lack of sleep.

What a horrible nightmare we are living in thanks to the neo-con facists who are running the entire world into the ground.

10. I understand
My situation has a lot to do with the constant pain I'm in that makes it very difficult to get any sort of calorie burning exercise. My job provides somewhat of a workout as I do a lot of dashing around and heavy lifting but it's not enough to actually lose anything.

I have arthritis in my back which keeps me from doing anything too high impact - walking helps it immensely. However, I've developed a case of either tendonitis or bursitis (or something else - my doctor is incompetent and I'm going to a new one next week) in my knee which is aggravated by walking!

So my back hurts more now and my knee is killing me (and swollen); in addition, I'm stressed and upset over the recent events in NOLA.

Yeah, I understand.

11. Doing well with my diet.
Anxiety upsets my stomach so I don't want to eat. So no problem on that front. Lost 6 lbs the last 3 weeks.

However, my school work is suffering terribly. I have a portion of a book chapter I'm supposed to be writing due tomorrow night and cannot seem to start on it.

Sleeping is not happening either. I laid awake all last night - not worrying exactly, not crying or upset exactly, but just...awake. The images of suffering people kept running through my head. Kept thinking about this administration and what they've done in the last 5 years and trying to make sense of everything.

It's like my mind is just on overload right now. I can't write, I can't sleep, can't do anything. It's bad.

I wouldn't be surprised if this entire nation is kind of suffering from a mild PTSD right now or something similar.

12. I know what it's like.
My advice: grab a bottle of water, an apple and a good book. Throw them in a canvas bag. Put on a decent pair of walking shoes. Take a walk to a local park, sit under a tree and read.
I do this sometimes. Sometimes I take a kite w/ me instead and fly it. I think I enjoy it more than the kids at the park do.

14. Some medications make you gain/lose weight
When I went on Paxil I gained 80 lbs over two years (I originally weighed 140 lbs.). I didn't change my diet or eating habits drasiticly, but my metabolism went wacky, and I ballooned up.

I've managed to drop about 30 of it over the past few years, but it's getting more difficult as I get older.

Best of luck to you in your efforts. It can be a tough road, but your health is worth it.

15. High cortisol (stress) levels often lead to weight gain
especially around the middle.

Just having a clean glass of water makes me realize how fortunate I am.

To think that is impossible for much of the world's population...
