We need another cute pet thread.
Here are the newest shots of my three. I had to leave them with family when I moved for grad scool, so got these on a recent trip home. I'm feeling sentimental tonight, missing them, so thought I'd share:

Harley (Looks pissed but is maniacally happily purring)

Lyle (Glam Style)

Petey! (Out of focus, but sooo Petey.)

Thanks for visiting! :hi:

22. Those kittens are too cute for words.
I hope your little one is okay by morning. I hate losing an animal. I lost one of my snakes a few days ago and even that hurts. Snakes don't return affection, but even a little life like that has value.

The animals that return our affection--dogs, cats, birds, etc.--are especially dear.

I finally decided to give up breeding birds when I lost an eight-week-old African grey to a heart defect. It was a "straw that broke the camel's back" kind of experience. At that age, baby parrots are innocent and so full of affection. And as many of you know, African greys may possibly be the smartest non-human animal. At eight weeks their intelligence is already evident. This little guy was especially loving. He died in my lap at the vet's office.

33. Thanks BrklynLiberal
She's such a sweetie-she would rather be held or curled in a lap than eat, drink, play, sleep...it's just awful that she suddenly became so ill.:-(

The trick for great photos is simple; good light (most of the time) and a toy. I use a cheap toy from Target; a plastic stick with feathers and bells on the end. I get their attention with it then move it toward the camera just as I click the shutter. That's why you often see one with it's paw raised, like this:

His eyes are green now but were the beautiful blue for the first few weeks.

I had a dream the day before I picked him up and dreamed of his name, and he has fufilled his destiny in spades. He jumps all over and chews on my pit bull (mix) and then cuddles with her. And yes, he hunts and kills bugs. He's a wild thing, fearless.

48. I love unusual pets.
King snakes, especially. I had a good friend growing up who had a king snake, and other who had a skunk. Both were great pets. And I don't think its true what you said above, that snakes don't give affection back. Her king snake used to wake up and demand to be handled when we came home from school (demanding in a swishing, snakey kinda way :) ).

Thanks for sharing your pets, and I'm sorry for your pet losses.

I grew up with german shepards. Petey's mom was a yellow german shepard (and his father was a sneaky neighber dog, part yellow lab, part great dane). No finer dog in the world than german shepards, imo.

Eddie is half blue heeler, half pit. He's the most awesome dog I've ever met, seriously. I never knew a dog and a person could love each other so much. If there's such a thing as doggie soul mates, that's what he is to me.

59. Funny...
The problem is I am such a pushover. When I go out into the field with her, she will paw the ground in front of me if I am sitting in the grass, and then FLOP into my lap, rolling onto her side so that her head is in my lap. Yesterday she essentially pinned me down by laying on my back with her head and neck, and proceeded to instantly fall asleep, snoring in my ear for about 45 minutes!

This behavior will soon have to be discouraged, as she is growing so fast.

60. Horses in Winter
The barn is an old bank barn... for the uninitiated, this is a way that barns used to be built into the side of a hill. They are two storied, with the horses down below, and then a huge hayloft on the upper level of the hill that the tractor and hay can easily be driven into.

The horses need blankets in the winter during turnout. We have been getting quite a bit of snow the past two years. It does get very cold at night, but the barn is not heated... having a bunch of warm hayburners in at night keeps the inside of the barn above freezing usually. Although I will say that I have slept on the concrete floor of this barn one week in below freezing weather, waiting for a foal to be born. NO FUN.

During the summers, with it being so hot this year, we do night turnout with the show horses.

Here's Regal Bull during the winter, kinda snoozing in the snow:

70. Wow.
I dogsit for two spaniels who are remarkably similar (one dark, one light), Ashley and Haley. When the two of them see a dangerous person (well, any person) walking in the neghborhood, they have this great dog opera that they sing. Haley barks in a ratta-tat-tat action while Ashley brays in a complementary soprano. Ashley is the the one colored like Libby, so that's really neat.

BTW, I'm through with having children, so I've started naming pets what I would name children. Emma is next on the list for girl pets. :)

I like cats, but, my older dog does not. So, we don't have cats. My parents do, though.
