He's no rock star, but he has shared a stage with the likes of Green Day, Story of the Year and Limp Bizkit. And he has appeared twice in Rolling Stone magazine.
Who is he? Gregory Rothberg, aka Pooh Bear.
For the last three years, the Great Kills 20-year-old has attended more than 500 shows at various venues throughout New York and New Jersey dressed in a Winnie-the-Pooh-style costume.
"People ask why and I say, 'why not?'" said Rothberg.
He gets recognized at shows by fellow fans and usually gets called onstage by band members.
"Billy Joe called me up
and told me to crowd-surf," said Rothberg, recalling a Green Day show he attended in April at the State University of New York at Binghamton. "At that point, I really didn't have a choice."
When he's onstage, the crowd usually starts chanting "Pooh!" and he said bands have told him everything from "You're crazy" and "You're awesome" to "Thanks for your support," and have dedicated songs to him.
Rothberg doesn't remember why he had a Winnie-the-Pooh outfit in the trunk of his 1994 Dodge Shadow, but he does know how the phenomenon got started.
He was going to see his friend's band, the now-defunct Moment of Truth, at Dock Street Bar and Grill in Stapleton and decided to wear the costume inside.
"I wanted to make them laugh onstage," said Rothberg.
After that, he explained, local bands were asking him to attend their shows because of the buzz he created.
"They were getting me into shows for free and putting me on their guest list," said the Susan Wagner High School graduate.
It was a year later that Rothberg went to his first big-name show as Pooh Bear.
He stood outside Webster Hall in his costume beginning at 8 a.m. waiting to be in the front row to see Limp Bizkit, Rothberg's favorite band.
So for him it was even more of a rush when Fred Durst, the band's lead singer, called him up onstage when they played the song "My Way."
"I just froze," he said.
A picture of Durst and Rothberg together onstage appeared in an issue of Rolling Stone magazine along with a small article about the performance.
