My dad (GreenLantern) and I are headed to mom's funeral shortly

I cut a bunch of my garden flowers to leave on her grave, as well as my great aunt's and grandfather's. It makes me feel a bit better somehow to leave that piece of me behind with them.

If you would like to leave my dad a note on this very difficult day, you can do so here: http://www.livejournal.com/community/thought_express/10899.html?mode=reply

4. Thank you very much. My grandfather had a plant nursery at one time. I
regret that I did not start growing flower until after he had Alzheimer's so badly that we couldn't talk about it. He would have loved to have known that someone in the family also "digs" gardening.

10. Oh you see it's like this... :^)
Great Aunt passed away in Sept, Grandfather in November and Mother in January. The family decided to do the services all together in the summertime when everyone could travel up to Maine from all over the country.

No bizarre accident that took them all at once or anything. :) Just a timing and logistics deal.

That makes sense. In Upstate NY, my birthplace, they often do the same to have a more comfortable service for all - a January outdoor funeral in Upstate New York is not necessarily something one wants to undertake.

I was hoping you hadn't lost all three suddenly, though I know their loss is no less real. May your day go as well as a day like this can go, and enjoy seeing all the relatives. Sometimes funerals are the only times I see certain family.

Later!

12. People who aren't from New England don't understand
about the ground being too hard to dig , and travel being really difficult in the winter...I've had to explain that to a few people.

You know you and your family will be in all of ourthoughts today.

44. GPV, I am sorry for the loss.
I've been there and it's so hard to lose your mother. We had to wait for warmer weather too, and it just takes a bit more out of you.
The nice thing about our Maine tradition is we get to send off our loved ones in the prettiest season, when the Earth is reminding us of renewal and rebirth.

26. There are no words that can ever lighten one's heart at a time like
this - nor should there be. You have joined the legions of us who have mourned the same kind of loss. Your love and devotion to your mother will never lessen. Your thoughts of her will always be with you.

Just know that there are those of us who are thinking of you and your father.
And also know that time DOES heal. Each one of us heals at a different rate.

28. The services were just gorgeous.. amazing...We
Edited on Mon Jun-27-05 07:00 PM by GreenPartyVoter
had my FIL officiate.. At the church a teacher colleague of my mom's read a lovely pair of statements from the school of memories about mom. My aunt read some poetry and a local woman sang the lovesong from "West Side Story" (The "Somewhere a place for us" one).

Then at the graveside service for my aunt, grandfather and mom, more of us shared memories of them all. My grandfather was buried with military honors so we had the colorguard and the 21 gun salute and Taps. For my mom we had the bagpipes played. Then we placed them in the ground and I took a daisy from my bouquet and placed it down there with them. (And two of our dogs who passed away years ago were also buried with my mom. The other one will go with my dad when it's his time.)

All in all a sad day but cathartic. I saw a lot of family and friends I haven't seen in years. It was good to get a hug from and give a hug to them all.

And I want to thank all my DU family and friends for their  It's been a long 5 months and you have all done so much to help my dad and me get through it.
