aka Judy Garland, who would've been 83 years old tomorrow. She was only around for 47 years, but what years they were.

God, I loved her in "A Star is Born". I didn't quite get into the "Judy Cult"...but she was fabulous in that film.

17. She was a great talent.
I won't deny that. But it's funny you should mention this....Doug, the b/f...and I were talking about this same thing the other night. I told him that I'm just not that emotional about her.

Yeah, she was a great talent. She was in some of the most beloved musicals ever..."The Wizard of Oz", "Meet Me in St. Louis" "Easter Parade" and the aforementioned "A Star is Born". And I remember a few years ago being on a gay message board and talking to a guy who was actually there in the audience at Judy Garland's immortal Carnegie Hall concert. It sounded like a once in a lifetime experience.

But otherwise....I don't know.

I'll submit to the hypno, Ronny. Just don't take away my gay card. I still adore Barbra and Bette (BOTH Bettes). :-)

21. OK you're safe.
You've got the Barbra and dual Bettes.

Whew!! That was a close one.

Speaking of La Barbra, she is another one that is bless with a talent that just can't be compared.

I know you've seen and/or heard her duet with Judy ... "Come On Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again". Holy crap!!!

From everything that Barbra has ever said or wrote about that moment, she always says that was a highlight of her carrier.

Thanks, sweetie. That was a close one. :scared:

That was a transcendent moment...Judy and Barbra. Yes, I've heard it. Barbra has worked sith some of the greats. But I don't think Barbra can top that.

2. Too bad she was never allowed to live her life....only to be used and
abused by others so she could make money for them.

3. As a child star
she was abused terribly by the studio heads - they kept her working all night long and then gave her uppers to keep her going all day.(Louie B. Mayer)

they wouldnt even let her eat, they starved her.

Terrible what greedy people do

8. True, Ronnyk....
and she'd do it with more heart than most other singers could muster singing the greatest torch songs.

12. and she also has soul.
Many people don't think of Judy as a "soul" singer. But she could sing a jazz number with the best of them.

"The Man That Got Away" is a torch song. Judy actually won a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal one time.

16. To think that she might still be alive.
Not to mention that she might have still been performing well into the 1980's or even 1990's.

God, what a loss.

One "good" thing that came from Judy's sad death.

In 1969 Gay men and Lesbians were mourning the day of Judy's funeral in NYC. The NYPD picked that night to do one of their raid on the gays bars.

Well, that night the gays fought back with the drag queens leading the way.

That was "The Stonewall Riots" and that was start of the gay rights movement.

I've had on some occasion had to read some "youngins" when they scoff at drag queens and/or the whole Judy worship thang.

Judy Garland and drag queens kicked ass and started what we have today.

15. Her voice was breathtaking. Perhaps the greatest vocalist of all time.
I'm trying to think of another one...um, I may use the "greatest vocalist of all time" phrase again, LOL.

But she was just...you can hear that she's *feeling* what she's singing. Just wonderful. Always a pleasure.

20. That is so true.
Ya know, she could sing a song for the 1000th time and still pour out emotion.

So many times, I've seen tapes or heard records of her singing "Over the Rainbow" and she still has trouble getting through that song without crying.

Amazing.

There are not many like her.

24. There is this great film
Edited on Thu Jun-09-05 08:11 PM by ronnykmarshall
called "I Could Go On Singing" w/ Judy. She basically played herself in way. She's a singer and had a son that she left with her ex-husband. The son is a big fan and gets to see her in concert.

There is this one scene that is sooooooo Judy. She and Karl Malden who plays her manager are waiting in the wings for her to go on stage. The orchestra is kicking ass with opening overture and she is getting pumped up to go on. As the orchestra and just busting their asses with massive horns and stuff, she and Karl are in the winds yelling "Go! Blow! Bloooow" cheering the horn section on. There is a clip from a bio (and now I gotta watch it) that Lorna tells that her mom used to get herself pumped up when the band was reaching that big moment she'd yell "FUCK EM! FUCK EM! FUCK EM!".

What a dame!

Added note: When my ex and I saw this bio he heard the "Fuck Em" remark and sniffed "Oh how vulgar!" and I replied "Oh please in couple of hours you'll be screaming something like that to me".

Dumb as post, but the S.E.X. was the only reason it lasted as long as it did.
