2. feb. 1996: It's something like...
"Dirk, let's give up the Internet, now. They start to include pictures and colours, now. It will never be again, what it was before. Let's just wait for some advertisement on the net. Let's buy books again and just simply talk. One more revolution that's lost"
From my friend Peter, hello from Germany,
Dirk

7. I delete my files every month because
I got my first email when the Internet was still called the Arpa net and you had to work at a good-size university to even get access to it. After many years of collecting email I realized that if I didn't get in the habit of deleting it monthly I have as many emails in my in box as I have assorted used nuts, bolts and widgets in my garage. That was a scary thought!

That came in handy a few months ago when some moron tried to sue our company over some product he claimed to have invented. Proving our design way predated his claim was easy, but the corporate lawyers sent a memo to everyone in the company requesting copies of all emails relating to that particular product. I just replied that I delete all emails every 30 days and was done with it. My co-workers had to spend hours and hours combing through years worth of their old email. Yuck!

Now If I can get in the habit of cleaning our my garage more than once per decade ...

9. I got my first email in 1979...
And it's probably stored away (in some strange form) in a box in my garage somewhere. Transfering nine track tapes to floppy disks was one black art I used to practice.

I been through a lot of email "accounts" since then.

At first I always had accounts through the University of California, sometime by the kindness of friends or strangers, whenever I wasn't actually enrolled.

Later I was on GEnie, back when science fiction author Jerry Pournelle was there. We had one or two short email exchanges. I think we were both drunk. I didn't save them.

I've got lot's of email saved from when I got my first "honest" commercial internet account in 1992. And I remember when I got my first AOL emails. Some of them told me I was going to go to hell if I didn't clean up my act.

I am the hardened veteran of some of the internet's very first Evolutionist vs. Creationist flame wars, which probably explains why I never bother to put anyone here at DU on "ignore."

10. didn't he also storm out on Fresh Air?
I think he got pissed when Terry referred to him as a "science fiction" writer. I don't write science fiction, I write science-based fantasy, or something like that.

It's the note with the activation code for some software. I generally keep those around in case I need to re-install anything. One other note from '02 -- all the rest are '03.

12. I have one from Al Gore, from 1897, stating
ComerPerro,
You have to see this thing I invented. I think I am going to call it the internet.

Damn FReepers.
Have someone distort one of your quotes, and then everyone takes it out of context and treats it like the lie of the century.
But say that a country is loaded with WMD, is trying to buy nuclear weapons, and is going to strike the US, and no one bats an eye when its proven false.
