Best road trip song?
I'm taking a net break during my weekend road trip. What is your all time favorite song to have blasting from your car stereo during a road trip? Easy Rider set the standard but I'm sure we can go way beyond that.

My pick is Blue Sky by the Allman Brothers Band. Its even more perfect for road trips in the South, the best road trippin region. I love that song. It sounds even better when you're driving down a rural highway in Georgia.

2. Two: the first is another from the Allman Brothers..."Ramblin' Man"
...it serendipitously came on the radio one time when I was on a road trip to Louisiana from NJ...the morning I was leaving Nashville heading south.

"I'm on my way to New Orleans this mornin'
leaving out of Nashville, Tennessee.
They're always havin' a good time down on the bayou..."

Yeee-Ha!

The second: "Travelin' Prayer" by Billy Joel.

3. I have two, both from Joni Mitchell's Hejira:
1. Coyote (a really good driving song)
2. Refuge of the Roads (somewhat more mellow)

Oh the hell with it. I could drive across country with my Joni and Steely Dan collections. Speaking of Steely Dan, "Deacon Blues" and "My Old School" come to mind.

But like I said, it's all good.

If it's just speeding around the track, though, I prefer instrumentals, like Satriani's "Can't Slow Down".

Doubles as my favorite kiss-off song as well. A monumentally underappreciated band for way too long, and Walter Salas-Humara is as nice a guy as they come..

Not a song to "blast" from your stereo but certainly a nice listen if you are meandering rural highways.

10. "Myrrh" - The Church
Edited on Sat May-28-05 09:33 PM by fudge stripe cookays
It has this really great, insistent beat that makes you think of driving fast; nothing like pumping this and opening the sunroof.

Add: "Black Metallic" by Catherine Wheel. Much slower by comparison, but also great for road trips.

And honorable mention for "Happy" by Ned's Atomic Dustbin.

16. Travelin' Man -- Bob Segar
Edited on Sat May-28-05 09:51 PM by Jara sang
We left Seattle last summer and had just made it over Snoqualmie Pass, it was about 11:30 at night and I just switched on the radio when that song came on(live version). It was day one of a month long road trip. That sent chills down my spine. Also Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man".

17. The highwayman by the Highwaymen
I was a highwayman. Along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five
But I am still alive.

I was a sailor. I was born upon the tide
And with the sea I did abide.
I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico
I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed
But I am living still.

I was a dam builder across the river deep and wide
Where steel and water did collide
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound
But I am still around..I'll always be around..and around and around and
around and around

I fly a starship across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again..

"I feel like bustin loose....like bustin loose"
"Gimme the bridge now!!"

I just went on a road trip, and made 3 cd's for it, one soul, one reggae, and one merengue & salsa.

They were all made to be the upbeat and faster songs to keep me awake and singing. Here's the soul one:

"Bustin' Loose" by Chuck Brown and The Soul Searchers
"Superman Lover" by Johnny Guitar Watson
"Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose" by Teddy Pendergrass
"I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby" by Barry White
"Rhymes" by Al Green
"Kissing My Love" by Bill Withers
"I Can't Stand The Rain" by Ann Peebles
"My Thang" by James Brown
"Pusher Man" by Curtis Mayfield and the Imperials
"Compared To What" by Billy Paul
"Take Five (live version)" by Al Jarreau
"The Way You Love Me" by Karyn White
"Danger" by Erykah Badu
"It's Love" by Jill Scott
"What I'd Say, Parts I & II" by Ray Charles
"Back In Love" by LTD

There were a couple of others on there, but I can't remember off the top of my head.
