STAR WARS: REVENGE OF THE SITH - derby378's review (SPOILER WARNING)
Edited on Mon May-23-05 04:16 PM by derby378
OK, I finally saw it on Sunday afternoon with ginbarn. Both of us agree that RotS is definitely better than The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones and thus worth the money we shelled out for admission.

I don't want to throw in any "real" spoilers, but here's the pros and cons:

Cons

RotS still suffers from wooden dialogue and stiff acting at times, especially from Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman.

Count Dooku (Christopher Lee) is the Rodney Dangerfield of Sith Lords - he gets no respect at all. But when he's on camera, he can steal the show.

Speaking of the Sith, don't hold your breath waiting for an explanation of where the Sith came from, why they're all referred to as Darth, or why there's only two Sith at any given time - one master, one apprentice.

Another "Tarzan" yell? You gotta be kidding me.

As you might have guessed, the end of RotS ties into the beginning of the original Star Wars movie (now subtitled A New Hope). But the patchwork is a bit hurried and spotty at times.

Pros

Just about everyone gets a chance to kick ass in this film. Even R2D2. And keep your eyes open for the enemy cyborg, General Greivous. Prepare for fightspeed, indeed!

The opening sequence is one of the more heated battles of the Clone Wars. It is also one of Lucas' least hyperactive battle sequences from the last three films, making it easier to track all the action.

This movie does something that its two predecessors cannot - it tugs at your heart. This is a much darker offering than the others, and one that supposedly carries a lot of political similarities with our current political climate. But that's open to interpretation.

All in all, I'll give it 8.5 out of 10. Well done.

and Darth Maul.

I couldn't believe it, and part of me died inside.

Also stupid: "Hold me, like you held me by the lake on Naboo". Poor Natalie Portman - she did not have a single line that was worth saying in the entire film. She was given crap. Yeah, she was kinda wooden, but remember - she was given pure crap to say.

Hayden has no excuse for his performance, though most times he was much better than in Episode II.

You should, by the way, put "spoiler alert" in your subject line.

3. I disagree
I think that Hayden was not woooden... sure he had some hokey dialogue.. but its in Star Wars style... I also think POrtman was more convincing... her line on the Senate floor was great and she did it well.. "This is how liberty dies. With thunderous applause," sure it wasn't perfect.... Ian and Ewan have learned to master Lucas Dialogue, but in no way were Hayden and Natalie completely wooden.

Hated the frankenstein yell most of all.... ridiculous. totally out of character.

loved Code 66... it completely made sense and allowed Lucas to kill off hordes of Jedi.

Admittedly I am a true Star Wars fan who tends to support Lucas' choices... but you have to admit that this trilogy really illustrates the loss of a democracy which mirrors the situation of our own too well.... I think its brilliant.

4. The Jedi are supposed to be reserved in their mannerisms...
As Yoda said, "Adventure. Feh. Excitement. A Jedi craves not these things." So you're not going to see Jedi wiseguys in the same mold as Han Solo.

I never really considered the Frankenstein angle until you brought it up - but to me, the outburst is fairly believable. Remember, at this point Vader is still a spoiled punk brat who just realized that (A) his beloved Padme is dead, and (B) he has to clomp around in a bulky metal suit for the rest of his life. It'll be some 20 years until the Death Star is complete, and plenty of time for Vader to shape his new persona into its more familiar shape.
