Electronically Inclined Persons, Help!

I bought a DVD Player/VCR combo this week. It's going back to the store tomorrow if I can't get it to work. I hooked it up to my TV the way it says in the instructions, but the cable reception was fubar. I tried connecting it another way and this way the cable works and the VCR/DVD won't. I get an error message saying "A-tr" on the player. Please help me before I take a hammer to this thing.

2. Look on your TV remote control for

something that allows you to switch input. You need to be able to switch the reception from your cable to your dvd player, and it's somewhere on your remote.

Hook it back up, wire for wire, the way they have it in the manual. Then grab your TV remote.

3. I have to use the WHO-INPUT button for DVD

Have digital cable, and I have to go back to my TV remote to use this feature. Weird, but it works. The VCR just works off the digital box like normal.
