32. This from the country that gave us MacDonalds
Pizza Hut &c.&c.

Some of our food may be lousy (though that stereotype is about as accurate as most), but at least it's food and it's ours.

"American cuisine", consists of taking other people's food and making it even worse, then making it mass produced so that it looks and tastes rather like plastic.

Because the food itseLf doesn't taste of anything.

Compare with the rough EngLish equivaLent - beef weLLington - which needs no such 'adornment'.

I'm not going to defend McDonalds, but just because there's *some* crap American food doesn't make UK "cuisine" defensible on any level. The US has some KILLER regional cuisines. Attacking McDonald's as "American cuisine" is a pathetic straw-man.

I've never heard such nonsense, and it's evident you haven't the foggiest idea about British food.

My point is that 'American' cuisine is simpLy copying and debasing other imported cuisines.

The reaL pethetic straw-man is the tired repitition of outmoded stereotypes about British food.

81. The flour crack was a JOKE.
"My point is that 'American' cuisine is simpLy copying and debasing other imported cuisines."

It's not copying or debasing when the people who do it are from the cultures that originated the dishes, adding new influences based on what's locally available and encounters with transplants from other cultures, which is true in the case of all USA regional cuisines. Is the increasing popularity of curry dishes in the UK, due to the presence of Pakistani immigrants, a debasement of anything? Are the English copying the curry or is the curry besmirching the purity of spotted dick? Crikey, mate, get a grip.

And by the way, cut the L shit. You're no sniffa.

84. We do have some wonderful regional food.
And we have excellent chefs that can prepare it. A great example is Bobby Flay and his preparation of Southwestern cuisine. If anyone has ever had that they would no longer argue that "American" food is blah.
We just like to think of American food as fast food. We always forget about the regional fare and even our own home cooked meals. Go to any truckstop in America and you will find something on the menu that is only featured in that area. Good prices, good food and usually great service.
America's greatest food is usually in the places that no one wants to eat because of appearance. That's why we get a bad rap-we don't gussy any of it up for anyone.

I think some Scottish and Irish too. They have shepard's pie, bangers and mash, and other things like that. It's supposed to be authentic British Isles food. I ate there once, I don't remember what I had but it was good. It's called Piper's pub, on the South Side.

On edit - here's their menu: http://www.piperspub.com/

10. I'm British, and I'm not even sure what "British cuisine" is
That's not to say the food here is bad. It isn't. There's no shortage of good restaurants to go to. But I've never seen anything advertising "British cuisine." Traditional British cooking is pretty rustic, and it's not the sort of thing you would go out to a restaurant for. So the idea of a "British restaurant," especially abroad, seems really strange to me.

I certainly don't think it's hate!

Just as one doesn't get 'French restaurants' in France, so too one doesn't get 'British restaurants' in Britain - and in America their cuLture is simpLy a debased version of our own, thus to advertise as specificaLLy British there is aLmost as superfLuous as it is here.

because it doesn't really exist anywhere else. Certainly not in India! It was created by Indian immigrants, or their descendents, living in Britain. For example, the Balti was invented in Birmingham. (England, not Alabama).

But there are British-styled pubs in most large North American cities, but I think the drawing card is the beer and not necessarily the food.

There is of course small Elephant and Castle chain that has a good selection of British styled food, ales and Scotch...

The Brits can fuck up boiled water if you don't teach them.

Don't get me wrong, they get a bad rap from a lot of the organ meats and ethnic foods, but since the 1980's they've been invaded by several different cultures with good cuisine, so it isn't as bleak as you'd think.

Don't believe me, go eat some steak and kidney pudding sometime. Bleah!

55. Hot dog is "German Cuisine". A Frankfurter ;)
And it seems to be true as well and a German brought it to New York as well ;)

It makes sense as well. Wurst is a typical German food

1690s - Another legend is that the popular sausage (known as "dachshund" or "little-dog" sausage) was created in the late 1600s by Johann Georghehner, a butcher living in Coburg, Germany. It is said that he later traveled to Frankfurt to promote his new product.

1867 - Charles Feltman, a German butcher, opened up the first Coney Island hot dog stand in Brooklyn, New York. According to the article Coney Island -Food & Dining by Jeffrey Stanton

72. In downtown Minneapolis, we have Brit's Pub and he Local
At Brit's Pub, you can get Cornish pasties, fish and chips, bangers and mash, and everything else you remember with fondness(?) from your trip to England.

According to a Brit of my acquaintance, however, the Local serves the most authentic fish and chips.

85. We used to have one in Fayettenam
T'was called the Squire's Pub, and they served traditional British cuisine at rather high prices.

The only thing they served that was edible was the fish & chips, and every barbecue joint in town has that for much cheaper than the Squire's Pub.

IIRC there's a tattoo parlor in that building now.

87. I'll ask Mum when she gets back
Repuke Man (now also "Stepdad") took KaMakuahine ("Mum" over there) to London for her birthday! (He goes back far enough to when there actually were repukes that were capable of walking upright.) They may have eaten at a British restaurant tonight for all I know!

Oh yes, here on tropical O'ahu, nearly halfway around the globe from GMT, there is a place called the Elephant and Castle...
