Tomorrow, the restoration begins...
A while back while driving, I spotted this old boat. It became mine for next to nothing, tomorrow it begins it's journey back to old glory. A 1959 Plastyle, made here in Michigan.

And the fins that made it work for me..

1. I love the fins
that boat has character which a lot of the newer designs sadly lack.

Almost as much character as an old Chriscraft....

the 50's style turquoise over white, we found some matching fabric to redo the rear bench seat.

3. Boat and motor, no trailer, $100.
I expected an argument from Mrs. Dave, but she was all for it.

11. The motor runs,
but I left it with my brother-in-law the marine mechanic to freshen it up a little.

12. She wants to name the boat,
so she gets to paint it on the back. Probably name it after the granddaughter.

4. I know nothing of boats and boat restoration
What kind of engine are you going to put on it? I bet that baby would really scream with a bass boat motor on it. And something just occurred to me. Why do the put the steering wheel on the right side in boats?

9. I know nothing about it either,
just reading a lot about how-to. It has the original 1959 40 hp Scott outboard, I don't know if it would handle anything over 60 hp.
I have to remove all the old wood from the transom and laminate new in, then repair the fiberglass before I paint. If it works out for me and the result is good, I think I have found a new hobby.

I never understood the right-drive thang, either.

14. Yeah I guess 225 hp might be a bit much
It would be interesting to see on such a small boat, though. How did you manage to move the boat without a trailer?

15. I rented
a small utility trailer, the guy I bought the boat from used a backhoe to ease it in for me.

I just picture hanging a big outboard on it, taking it to the launch and watching it go down like a rock. If the restore does not go well, I might do that anyway. ;-)

6. Wow, have fun!
Love the fins - they must have put them on almost everything in the 50s.

A guy down the street had an old boat with fins like that, I always thought it made the boat unique and different!

13. There's a site
for all the old fiberglass boats, seems the finned boats always draw attention, and since I'm an attention whore, it works for me!:P

16. I know nothing about motor boats, but his was in much worse shape than
yours - it sat moldy and neglected on a trailer beside his house. The top (deck?) was turquoise - what a classic 50s color! I think he ended up giving it away, as I haven't seen it in almost a year. :(

Good luck with your restoration - please post more pics as you go, and of the final results! :-)
