I have nothing against them because I've never witnessed any ugliness from them personally, so I don't even know exactly who, among them, was involved that finally got Skinner so upset. But obviously, Sniffa was one of them. But yes, there is definitely a solidly formed "clique" of people here who have formed a group friendship. Many of them even got together recently and partied together, and the rest of us have had to wade through their endless "in crowd" threads about that meet-up ever since. I have nothing against that, but I do understand Skinner's complaint when a group like that teams up to pick on a smaller group (here, just a husband and wife) and cheer and hoot and holler in an apparently very juvenile and cruel way over their departure.

For that reason and that reason alone, I have to side with Skinner's decision. I sure wouldn't want to carry his burden here. Yeah, he may let Sniffa back someday, I don't know - I have no idea what Skinner knows about the whole sordid ordeal. And there's nothing wrong with wanting to support a friend, but I just wish that people who feel that way would also try to show respect for the poor guy who has to manage this nuthouse.

anything about "Sniffa" or "CO Liberal" or his wife "Princess" or their conflicts.

But what you says rings true from what little I've seen of the whole mess.

The only one among the bunch that I recall reading some posts from was Colorado Liberal. Maybe it was his avatar, I don't know. I vaguely recall liking some of the things he said. I also vaguely recall thinking he had a bit of a short fuse at times. I don't really know. If the things some people have said about him and his wife are at all true, I can understand people getting upset with them. OTOH I've seen some really bad exaggerations and misrepresentations about positions they've supposedly taken. Unfortunately, people just tend to behave in these ways when they're upset with someone they disagree with or just have grown to dislike.

I can understand, for instance, why John Kleeb would be upset if Princess, for instance, wanted to see the DU rules changed to identify anyone under 18 because she didn't want to engage with "a child". John obviously, at 17, now, has grown to the point that he wants to feel like an "adult" (witness the pictures of him drunk and the comments with his friends in the Boston meet-up) and would naturally take any reference to someone under 18 as "a child" as a personal affront. But I think that issue was blown way out of proportion, not so much by John Kleeb himself as by his supporters in the "in" crowd, who adopted him in their campaign against CO Liberal and Princess. Apparently, it was a passing thing that happened a long time ago, and people kept using it to attack Princess.

OTOH, I can somewhat empathize with someone who doesn't want to interact with teenagers on an internet forum, but I do not approve of Princess's approach to it by requesting that anyone under 18 be identified as such. It was insensitive, immature, and unnecessary for her to make that request. Any adult can easily spot someone they don't want to interract with, whether because of age or any other factor. That's what we all deal with in internet discussion groups all the time. I personally have gotten along with a lot of internet posters who are young enough to be my grand-child (even younger than Kleeb). And I've only had the unfortunate experience of having to place one DU poster on "ignore" once and only once - someone who sent red lights off in my mind - "freeper" - "troll" - "terminate" - "press button" - "which button?" - "ignore button". Never saw him again.

It always pains me to see people who post in a wonderful forum like this whom I have always considered to be wonderful people fall into an ugly spat like what we just witnessed. I am not educated enough about it all to take sides, and wouldn't even if I were. I just feel bad for everyone involved.

In conclusion, I might add that "the Golden Rule" can go a long way here as everywhere in not only promoting good will but healing scars as well. That's why I put up my little Disney post about Thumper's words when reminded by his momma: "If you can't say somethin' nice... don't say nothin' at all." :)

There I people I have liked on this site and people I haven't, but I've not EVER used that as a litmus test for challenging their being here but for one person who stalked me online and in person..and if that were happening to another DU'er, I'd support them in that. That affected who got to stay under the guise of "fairness and giving people a chance" and who got canned as a troll since mods get a vote on who stays and who goes.

These are people who have access to things like your real name if it is part of your email addy.

That's FUCKS with the condition of trust and benefit of the doubt created here or not.

Admin will not let you moderate if you have voiced strong opinions..especially strong feminist opinions.
So what did they do? They went the other extreme and ended up letting an anti-feminist troll (and yes, that is my opinion of Cuban Lberal and Padraig) moderate. All they had to do was search the archives when considering mods to serve and they would have seen that Cuban Liberal and Padraig BOTH joined during the Kobe fiasco and were less than progressive on the subject (innocent until proven guilty not withstanding, of course.)

In my view, that blindness caused SOME but not all of the behavior you've seen.

particularly in the aftermath of the CubanLiberal thing... and that does relate, imo, to the 'edginess' in tone, and the group response in the immediate aftermath (as was the case in the elections forum when bev was kicked out - that there was a period of edginess in the primary forum that she had been involved with.)

I think the edginess combined with the combativeness spurred on by the Princess thing... led to more personal attacks followed by verbal high fives... which sorta egged on more of the same - but sorta got diffuse (that is would lash out, at times unpredictably, at unsuspecting duers who might just honestly hold out differing views on differing topics). And that last thing - loops back to your point... and an underlying edginess per who is legit and who is trolling.

These have been some hard times - and I guess some residual edginess should have been predictable. I am finally at a point, however, where I am starting to view this last dustup - and the ensuing conversations... as actually healthy. There does need to be more discussion about our dynamics. And a little more openness about some decisions - or the rationale behind them - per admin/mods might alleviate some of the edginess that builds up. While I recognize the ATA forum must have been a pain to keep up with (it was rather repetitive) - it did at least provide a steam/pressure valve - and a place to get, at times, a little more insight into what goes into certain decisions - which, imo, built a little more trust. Not necessarily a trust or not trust for the admins.... but for the overall community - as they do the shepherding, so to speak, of the community.

but I do think there are some real problematic group dynamics that have developed in the lounge - that give off a bit of this feeling to many. Just dismissing it as "their" problem rather than wondering - whoa when did this happen ... as in many in the lounge have been friends for a while ... hung out and played... but didn't seem to leave a bunch of folks having a sense of 'dread' were they to espouse an alternate view on a thread in which a dominent view had emerged... for fear of a group pileon that where once would have been snarky, is now perceived to border on cruel. I do think we have an issue. Just saying it is "their" fault (as in those who feel this way) doesn't make it go away. Sadly it does the opposite - sort of a pygmalion thing (set expectations that then create the reality) - as fewer folks post on certain threads - thus to the reader it is all the same people.. lest a poster ventures in says "the wrong thing" gets jumped on my like minded folks (all legitimate - except when the jump on goes south to personal attack rather than snarky snide comment)... but to the reader suddenly due to the lack of alternative views (due to the apprehension of those who "think" there is an ingroup/outgroup thing going on)... voila to readers - it appears - even if it was never intended to be - an ingroup/outgroup dynamic. I consider you all my friends. We have laughed together over a long period of time. But at times a dynamic has developed that is frankly not as funloving and playful for many as it once was. As are significant percentages of "push the envelope" and "rile members up" posts (which is one of the reasons why other members should be slow to do these things -- or take them up). And one of the objectives of troll posts is to take out members (to get them to leave or be 'stoned) of otherwise good standing. (Making members afraid to post on certain subjects, making them (and the board generally) look bad, distraction, disruption, etc, are some other objectives.)

This board is under constant attack -- and sometimes by pretty big fish (or foul). (Although this does not appear to be the case here.)

And again, I recommend thinking about member objectives when examining member posts. Moreover, we should not let minor trolls (very minor, in this case) stir up this much trouble -- because then how are we to deal with the big ones.

And do remember what we are fighting for... and against. This is war, people, not the prom. We need fighting, not foolishness.

GD's where we can mix it up over actual issues. Sort of like the Q&A session of the weekly city council meeting.

The lounge is more like a neighborhood bar where things get a little weird, a little cliquish, a little out of hand from time to time--just like any good bar does.

There are always going to be in-jokes; I used to be a much, much bigger part of that before I retired my old nick, took a year off, and came back as a much more reticent version of my previous self (I'm an "original" DUer, former mod, etc. etc. etc.). I will say that it's VERY interesting looking in suddenly as an outsider. It gives me a much more sympathetic perspective on newbies, and is amusing to see people who used to view me as one of the "in" people now pretty much ignore me. That's OK, though--that's not why I came back (mostly it was to participate on GD on an abbreviated scale).

But I still like the lounge. Sure, I'm kind of actively ignored by certain posters (even a couple who know who I was the first time around), and my threads don't get many responses, but I still have fun joining in occasionally and have learned not to take it all so seriously.

One of the things that was first established was that we all liked DU and that place would be free of DU bashing. I don't think any of us liked that "trolling for sympathy" thing there either. I was trying to point that out yesterday (as tactfully as possible given my frustration level). People can have clashes or problems (on a board the size of DU, it's almost inevitable over time). The thing is that one has to handle it with some maturity nd (dare I say) self-insight. Things are rarely just black and white.

There had been running spats between various of the personae on this board, those two included.

Longtime DUer CO Liberal posted that he was taking a break from DU, because he felt that the place had changed, and that he and his wife (thePrincess) had been subjected to a lot of unpleasantness. Some people said that they'd be sorry to see CO leave, and others said that they themselves had been subjected to nastiness by CO and Princess, and therefore would NOT be sorry to have them go away.

In that thread someone (not Sniffa, actually) posted a cartoon picture of a boy riding a whale. The picture had been altered to add a Robin Hood hat like the one in CO's picture.

Everyone knew what it meant. Ask me if you need it spelled out.

The Princess posted a good bye thread of her own, and said that she'd cried over it all. More ridicule and hilarity followed

A few of us objected to the ridicule, and the mods and admins went to work. Little remains of those exchanges.

The Princess, evidently thirsting for revenge, left here and went to post on a site called Conservative Underground -- a site which seems to be devoted to stalking DU, gawd knows why. There she posted that she was a libertarian who had posted on DU because she'd thought it would be fun, but that she felt hurt now, and was therefore henceforth going to play around on the Dark Side for a while. Her husband, evidently, really is a sincere liberal.

The perfidy of the Princess did not escape notice here, and was the cause of much outrage from the same people who had ridiculed her about her weight. Somewhere in all of this, a very popular poster named Sniffa was banned for what the admins say was repeated rule-breaking after numerous warnings. This action has been met with more outrage. The blood on the floor has risen to our knees. Won't you come join us as we tread the crimson tide!

I really don't know where to start.

I've met sniffa, mike, in person, and he's great guy- sharp as a whip, and very sarcastic humour. But never to the point where you feel bad- and I am a short, chubby, Yankees fan in BOSTON for fuck's sake. That's comic material.
After a shitty week in March, Sniffa took me with his girlfriend out for dinner and pickd up the tab- it was a really nice gesture that I still appreciate TREMENDOUSLY.
I frequent the longue, I consider myself a lounge lizard, and to be honest, I have no idea how I feel about the cliques. I don't know if I'm a part of it- I suspect no- and even if I am, it is irrelevant.
I am speaking from what I saw of The Princess, who along with her husband, who treated others horribly- especially the younger posters on this site. As someone who is 20, and who LOVES the teenagers on this site, I was very offended by their...caustic remarks. And yet, when others pointed out this, they ALWAYS cried about how fat people are hated- it made NO sense and it KEPT REPEATING.
I'm not sad she's gone. And the fiasco at CU shows her true colors. She wasn't a valuble member of the community.
Sniffa, on the other hand, despite his somewhat off-beat humor, gave to the community. He made people feel welcome. He's a great guy.
So that's that. I don't know what else to say.
I hope he comes back.

Why do rules exist?

Because something like "somebody's value to the community" is intangible, and in order for a community like this to exist in the real world, it has to have tangible, quantifiable rules. They are only approximations, by definition.

An equivalent is the voting age, or the drinking age. Is every single 20 year old not mature enough to handle alcohol, and every single 22-year-old is? Of course not. But by the nature of things, we have to draw the line somewhere, and we drew it where it statistically seemed the most prudent.

If a society had the resources to somehow convincingly estimate the maturity (when it comes to alcohol) of every individual, then it would make sense to have individual drinking ages. But realistically, that is impossible.

It's not impossible for DU. This thread reads like an incontrovertible proof that Sniffa is valuable to this community. This thread is a more accurate representation of that fact than any level of dry compliance with rules could ever be.

I'm not saying that this means that DU policy should change. I'm aware of the obvious questions: "does this mean that Trumad can come back too", "should we vote about every member", etc etc. No. That would be impossible in reality. But circumstances of this are unique, and the lucky thing in this fiasco is that among other things, one fact came to light: this community values Sniffa.

Actually, two facts: also, that he broke the rules in an interaction with somebody who did not act in accordance to values of DU, as this thread also shows. It's a near consensus. I'll even say that he did what many people have wanted to do, except that he didn't have the self-control to stop himself from it.

So I'm asking you to re-instate him.

Most of us have all let ourselves get baited and goaded into a flamewar. Some of us - okay I (shouldn't project this onto anyone else) get goaded enough to be much more harsh than we would in other circumstances. However, most of us realize when we are about to go far over a set line. I stop having sympathy when that line was just drawn, by Skinner, and crossed less than 24 hours.

The Princess sounds as though she has caused great drama and frustration from many. Reading this, I am glad I had little interaction with her. However I have always hated when the response to others moves into cruel territory. Personal thing with me. But again - that is neither here nor there.

She clearly did herself in.

As did Sniffa (whose crime, it reads, is defying Skinner.. and mods), so characterizing it as HER pulling him down doesn't quite seem accurate. And doesn't let us learn from it - as in what not to do even when in the heat of a big and personal flame war.

Many of us have skated close to the line without going over... I've put people on ignore because I knew that they might be able to bait me over the line. And I'm positive a certain recently banned troll would have taken any opportunity to push me over the line.

I suppose my sympathy comes from having not had the restraint in the past and having resorted to fighting back with whatever tools are there. That's what I saw sniffa doing, and having had an encounter with her personality that prompted me to start ignoring her months ago, I can understand how someone can be pushed over the line.

Bottom line though is that you're right. The rules are pretty plain, and after repeated warnings, it would seem that sniffa was the cause of his own downfall. Knowing him though, I think he probably did learn from this, as have other previously banned posters who eventually were able to rejoin, and I hope he can find his way back in here.

I would think that it was just that folks blame Princess for Sniffa's banning... but it appears that he knowingly crossed lines that Skinner himself laid out less than 24 hours earlier.

It isn't just the angst I am reading - and I could understand that. It is the implied, or tacit approval of the behavior of one who crossed a line into direct, personal cruelty - with the outright indignation of the other one. I dunno, the lack of consistency bothers me - but not as much as the pre-banning (aka round one on thursday) intentional, personal cruelty that was immediately cheered, and egged on which, imo validated the direction that ultimately was followed by both - that bothers me. Given Skinner's earlier warning, those choosing to continue on that course got what was to follow. The fact that one was well liked and the other wasn't, in my book, is irrelevant.

There's been a lot of frustration about The Princess here for a while. She was a provacateur, someone who was always instigating and whenever that behavior produced the inevitable result, she would run to the Admins or post a tearful "everybody is picking on the fat girl" thread. She was not a particularly likeable individual and I think a lot of the people who are venting here are simply saying all the things they couldn't before. That's a natural reaction and most of it I wouldn't call bashing.

I pretty much kept out of the Fat Actress/Woody Allen/let's flirt/look at me dramas, though I consumed a lot of popcorn while I read through them. But I could sure see who the instigators were. We all could.

I'm sorry that Sniffa got caught up in all this because he was a lot of fun. I hope he returns. And as for the discussion regarding cliques, it amuses me that some people take things so seriously. In both instances, the "victims" ran to other boards to basically gloat. There are pain in the ass attention whores on message boards who act aggrieved, but honesty love the attention. There are also people who are mentally disturbed. And they're everywhere on the internet. And others get caught up in their game, it spirals out of contol until the admins are fed up and act. so when I saw a thread from P talking about hurt feelings and the 'roomier' thread, I felt bad for her. I thought she might have been misreading it when I saw it as a nonsense thread (I was obviously wrong), but I still felt sorry for her. I had no idea it had anything to do with sniffa. I am horrible with names IRL, and here as well. It takes me several conversations to put a name in my head permanently.

As to the matter at hand, both parties are at fault here. That's why things were done the way they were. I had little or no interaction with Sniffa. He was very popular. Ok, but baited or not there are rules here. Period. End of discussion. I think to do what Princess did merits tombstoning. I got the feeling she never felt at home here. Yeah she may have issues but who doesn't? Some of us are more demonstrative than others. Some will internalize everything and let it eat them alive. Some will unfortunately take it out on others. And a great many of us myself included need to take a fucking chill pill from time to time.

I think of it like this. This ain't no Columbine. This ain't no Mai Lai Massacre. No one died. It's an internet board with thousands of personalities, some of them clashing. Not many thankfully but a few.

It's art. What can it really do to harm others? Personally, I don't know what is in the heart and mind of this man Ratzinger, nor do I care one way or another. I don't think he was the right choice, but that's none of my business. I made this pic as a response to all the comments others were making about him. It's just social commentary and a homage to another artist.

I would like permission to show this pic to others on DU. If you say "no," I will abide as I have been since I was told it was "uneccessarily imflammatory." ... But, is it really more inflammatory than the rhetoric one can read daily here on DU? Is this shouting "fire" in a theater? I do not believe so. There is no intent to do harm to anyone here, nor do I believe my piece can hurt anyone in any way. Why ascribe that kind of power to my work?

Forgive me if this had been already addressed; I think a good chunk of the bad feelings about some of what's happened today (and I'm talking about the whole "clique" thing) could be fixed by having an official DU chat room of some kind.

I think the sheer volume of the kind of chatty threads ("Y's being me to me! Make her stop!" or "where should the "X" DU'ers meet up?" and other similar kinds of threads)here lend them to go on chat anyway; they are basically posts only for a subset of posters here, and are a natural for chat instead of a discussion board, even in a place thart's moe informal like The Lounge.

I know the next thing to say will be "use hide thread or ignore if you don't want to see them!"; as I said on my post a couple days ago, I do that anyway. But I think that it would solve 2 things; it would take a big chunk of these kinds of threads out of The Lounge and to a more natural place, and it would ease the hostility all around.

I don't know if it's do-able; maybe it's something to consider.

My comment wasn't in jest -- and whether you were serious about your comment isn't really relevant for mine. It wasn't a comment about you, but about the athmosphere on DU. One can think Kerry's inconsistent and still be a great liberal.

I, myself, never really like a politician at all -- at least not one that can possibly climb the ladder of DC as high as Kerry has (Barbara Boxer or Cynthia McKinney do genuinely warm my heart sometimes). I think that you have to be a flip-flopping double-speaking crook if you want to run for president in America anyway. I've never enthusiastically voted for president, but only for the lesser of two evils -- and with the GOP there, FAR lesser of the two evils would be more accurate.

Could a good man become president? Yes. Is it possible that Kerry is a good man? Very. Is it possible to run a straight-talking honest campaign for president? Fuck no.

I have a renewed respect for the wisdom of the ignore and hide thread feature.

The only suggestion I have is, it may be wise to ban all "I'm leaving because you suck" post in the future. Let's face it, no good can come from them and I've seen this twice in just a few months here on DU.

In closing, try and remember even though this is just an internet message board. ...it is exceedingly difficult to be "appropriately nasty" on this site, and I'm talking site-wide. Lots of nasty, vile, rude and obscene things are just fine and dandy...others will get yer post or yer self knocked right off this place.

Hard to know what the rules are in such an environment, where incivility is normative, but there is an ephemeral and apparently arbitrary outer limit to the envelope that is enforced intermittently.

I left here for a couple months because I was so offended by what I read. Yet those things that deeply offended me were OK. My posts responding to them were not, and were pulled.

So I personally have given up on "the rules." I won't be totally nasty, pornographic, etc. (I never have been), but if the powers think I'm off base, let them blow my stuff away. This is the only route I can take, since there are in reality no real rules, even though some things looking like them have been written for the site.

Love DU, I just think that in an overall atmosphere of irreverence, crudity, insults, and nastiness it then becomes difficult to say, "Oh no, that post you just made violates our sensibilities."
