Poll question: Should I buy Green Day's "American Idiot"?
I have been eyeing that album and am tempted to get it at some point, and I like some of Green Day's stuff but have never been a huge fan, but this album is intriguing to me to say the least. Seems like an album that is a true instant classic.

Why or why not?

2. I've heard it's like a rock opera and
they are considering making a movie based on the album. I think the album is worth it just for "American Idiot" and "Holiday."

Nofx - Franco Un - American Lyrics
I never thought about the universe, it made me feel small
Never thought about the problems of this planet at all
Global warming, radio-active sites
Imperialistic wrongs and animal rights! no!

Why think of all the bad things when life is so good?
Why help with an ?am? when there?s always a ?could??
Let the whales worry about the poisons in the sea
Outside of california, it?s foreign policy

I don?t want changes, I have no reactions
Your dilemmas are my distractions

That?s no way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco, franco un-american

I never looked around, never second-guessed
Then I read some howard zinn now I?m always depressed
And now I can?t sleep from years of apathy
All because I read a little noam chomsky

I?m eating vegetation, ?cause of fast food nation
I?m wearing a couple of shoes ?cause of globalization
I?m watching michael moore expose the awful truth
I?m listening to public enemy and reagan youth

I see no world peace ?cause of zealous armed forces
I eat no breath-mints ?cause their from de-hoofed horses
Now I can?t believe; what an absolute failure
The president?s laughing ?cause we voted for nader

That?s no way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco un-american
No way to go, franco un-american
Where can we go, franco un-american

I want to move north and be a canadian
Or hang down low with the nice australians
I don?t want to be another ?i-don?t-care-ican?
What are we gonna do franco, franco un-american

4. Yes.
The whole album is splendid, not a bad song on it.

That's rare these days. :)

And it manages to be political without getting all annoying.

5. Honestly, it's overrated
Pick it up if you're a big fan of pop punk, but there is nothing new or noteworthy about the album. It's not even close to their best effort musically.

The sentiment behind the album is laudable, but the music is just so so.

6. YES I loved all the songs and especially Holiday
a sample of lyrics from end of song, and I love the line "I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies":

Zieg Heil to the president gasman
Bombs away is your punishment
Pulverize the Eiffel towers
Who criticize your government
Bang bang goes the broken glass and
Kill all the fags that don't agree
Trials by fire, setting fire
Is not a way that's meant for me
Just cause, just cause, because we're outlaws yeah!

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives

This is our lives on holiday

7. Yes do buy it
I don't normally like punk music but this one stands out. In all the lyrics they take a jab at the chimp. Although the sound quality isn't that good the message still comes across. Allmost every song on that album is political but probably the wingers wouldn't notice it because well they are retarted.

A fine album and thats why greenday won a grammy for it.

10. Yes!
It's not the greatest album ever invented, but it's VERY good and I didn't find a bad song on the whole CD. I'm not sure how it is around you, but some of the local stations are KILLING their songs (waaaay too much play of the same one). I think that a few of the best songs are ones that haven't even been released as singles yet.

11. One Good Thing About Being An NPR Listener!
The album can't get killed for me by the radio! Right now, "Jesus of Suburbia" is my favorite track, and it's not real likely that ad-driven FM is going to put a 9+ minute song into heavy rotation anyway.

It's a very good album. I was somewhat familiar with their work before I got it (and I bought it mostly to vote with money) and I wasn't a big fan. I am now, and think I need to get the rest of their catalog. No, it's not the best thing ever recorded, but it's a damn sight better than most of the crap that's put out these days.

but my brother absolutely loves it, and I guess they deserve credit for trying something a bit more ambitious than usual...
