CINCINNATI -- A man hired to repossess a pickup truck drove off with a sleeping toddler in the back seat. The 2-year-old girl was found about 40 minutes later, still asleep.
The man had trailed Gregory Brown, the girl's father, and Tina Brick, her mother, early Wednesday morning to a gas station, police said. While they were inside, he jumped into the truck and drove away, using his own set of keys and unaware that Katina Brown, who was wearing pajamas, was inside the cab of the extended truck, police said.
Brown called police about 4 a.m. Wednesday as soon as he saw his truck being driven away and reported it stolen but failed to mention the child, authorities said. When officers arrived, they found that she had been in the truck.
Police said that the man who repossessed the truck for Paddock Auto Sales returned it to the Paddock lot a few miles away and made a routine call to police to let them know he had repossessed a vehicle. He still did not know the child was inside, police said. The child was recovered there about 40 minutes after the truck was taken from the gas station parking lot.
Brown, 42, of Dayton, Ky., was charged with endangering a child, receiving stolen property and illegally transporting weapons. Police said stolen license plates and three loaded guns were found in the truck.
Police said neither Brick nor the man who repossessed the truck were charged. The girl went home with her mother.
