Lincoln Chaffee explains his support for John Bolton.

"I like his mustache... It's a nice mustache... It's a very, very nice mustache... I like it..."

1. Does anybody know who can fill me in here?
Is Chafee under pressure from his party's cons to support Bolton or face lack of support in his Senate race?

Is that it?

Otherwise I don't see a smart guy like him voting for such a pathetic excuse for a U.N. ambassador.

Gimme some educatin' on this one.

2. I wouldn't go so far as to call him "smart."
I don't understand his support for Bolton myself. He may feel that a "president" is entitled to his nominees unless something criminal in their past arises. I don't know what his history on Bush nominees has been, but he's not been the great liberal he's made out to be. He tends to show most spine and independence on economic and social issues.

3. I think the explanation is...
That he's a submissive type who loves to be humiliated by big tough Republican psychopaths.

And my impression of his is that he is not the brightest bulb on the tree. He's going to have a real fight on his hands next year.

6. Oh. Well, that would explain some of his hesitancies.
Bolton is so flagrantly inappropriate for this post, that I'd think even a dim bulb could feel ok voting the nomination down.

Well, let's get a liberal Democrat to run against him -- is Whitehouse any good?

8. Follow barbarann's link to his actual statement.

He thinks Bolton might be able to help reform the UN? But he misses John Danforth's moderation?!

11. This could be a good time to call in the Senatorial --
-- Gobbledygook Squad.

"Yes. That would be Senator Chafee's office. Yes. And please hurry!"

4. There was talk of Robert Kennedy running against Chaffee
I hope he does. If Chaffee supports this asswipe despite everything he has heard, then Rhode Island deserves a better senator
