Camille Paglia - total nausea
that article in Salon ... could the woman be more full of herself? Am I the only one who thought she came of as repulsively arrogant?

1. She is a total witch.
She's one of the 1990s "antifeminist feminists." She's gussied up and repackaged the blame-the-victim-for-her-rape line, among many other stances.

I cannot stand her. You are certainly right when you say that she's full of herself.

2. Camille Paglia full of herself? Surely you jest!
:sarcasm:

Allow me to employ an analogy summarizing my feelings about Camille Paglia:

4. I've enjoyed her writing and occassionally her contrarian 'tude...
..but her "sell by" date has long since passed.

just because someone has a strong opinion about "elitist" topics doesn't make them arrogant.

The arts are important - but we completely deprioritize them in our public education system.

In academia, there is a definite "gatekeeping" going on. In some circles it's not good enough to write a new sonnet in the style of Shakespeare; "that's been done already" or a new sonata in the style of Beethoven or Mozart or a nocturne or scherzo in the style of Chopin. You must break new ground all the time, even when breaking new ground just becomes more and more bizarre. Students are encouraged to explore abstract expressionism before they've ever learned to draw or sculpt the human form or render a still life, and some never do learn.

On the other hand you have academics who are exactly 180 degrees away from that - any exploration of new media or expression is discouraged or at least looked upon as eccentric or merely a necessary evil.

On edit: sorry - I don't know her other "social" history - I guess she's not very likable otherwise.

6. Have read many interviews with Camille Paglia --
-- and while I disagree on some points, I am almost stunned by the range of her mind and her agility in expressing ideas.

Often when males in academia have that kind of range they get free passes on content, but sometimes Paglia is excoriated because she is a woman with the same (or greater) talents.

She has been one of the very most persuasive and influential supporters of gay and lesbian rights in the modern world.

9. Bingo!
I remember when she first became known nationally and was hailed as a great feminist. I was repulsed by her from the get-go. "Anti-feminist" doesn't even begin to describe her.

:puke:

10. GREAT way to describe her.
And an utterly empty intellectual. Even her old mentor, Harold Bloom, won't have much to do with her anymore. A sham academic, she is.

11. She's incomprehensible
I've never been able to read anything she's written, but, what I did manage to get through was dull, plodding, and unoriginal.
