Ok - gods I hate the east coast bias
Two baseball players got beaned in the helmet in yesterday's games. One was the Twins' Justin Morneau, the other was the Yankees' Derek Jeter. Guess who got more than a passing reference on Sportscenter!

GRRRRRRRRR

Justin Morneau actually got hurt worse...

1. We notice that in Illinois, too.
However, I think it is both coast bias. If it is not New York or California, they ignore it, as though there is nothing in between.

2. flyover land
GRRR

Nothing ever happens here, except when some kid decided to go postal at his high school...and if it is a high school with predominantly brown people, the coverage will be preempted by removing a feeding tube from an already long dead white woman.

16. Exactly. It isn't just with sports.
Its a real problem in the media. It happens within the Democratic Party sometimes too. There are too many people making decisions who are clueless about "flyover" country.

3. this drives me crazy
When it comes to baseball, it is the Yankees/Red sox and no one else. I don't even think they cover the west coast teams much either. During the playoffs, it is noticeable that they decide to put the Yankees or Red Sox on prime time and the Twins either on ESPN2 or during the day or not at all. Commentators also give non-east coast teams hardly a chance to win.

4. Market share...........
Jeter is a marquis player for the Yanks, the biggest market in baseball. Morneau plays in Minnesota, one of the smallest markets in baseball.
I know, it's not fair, but it's like the President of Lichtenstein having a coronary at the same time the pResident of the United States has one. Who's 'gonna get the coverage?

6. He does have the potential to be
In a sense, it happened at his "hometown" park - He is from Vancouver BC, and the game was in Seattle, so he had quite a cheering section present for the game.

Poor kid

8. LH relief pitcher Ron Villone
JM really got clocked...you know that sickening thud you hear when someone gets beaned in the head? Gives me chills thinking about it.

9. Ah, Villone
Never really liked him, was kind of disappointed when they re-signed him. But I suppose he's better than Thornton, who singlehandedly lost the game for the M's on Tuesday.

I remember when Sosa got hit in the helmet a couple years ago. Cracked his helmet he got hit so hard. Ichiro got a bad one last year against, I think, the Royals.

10. cracked helmet
now that is a beanball.

I do not think it was intentional...Is Villone streaky - he strikes me as a pitcher who is either on or off, no in between.

Our JC Romero drives me nuts. Most of the times he has great stuff, but when he is off - they might as well add 5 runs to the opponent's score, then let the Twins come back to bat.

11. The Twin Cities is NOT one of the smallest markets in baseball.
Edited on Thu Apr-07-05 06:08 AM by SmileyBoy
It's a TV market of over 3 million, the 14th-largest in the country, and the 3rd largest in the Midwest.

God, I HATE it when people say this. It's a big lie!!!

15. You, MrScorpio are in a veritable baseball wasteland
I would DIE if I could not see my Twins live at least 4 games a year.

17. I miss baseball.
I notice that there is a bias in elections too. They hardly ever count California's votes before they "project" elections. That DOES make me wonder if chimpy really got the popular vote this last time or even came close. I've always wondered if I am the only one bothered by the "projection" of elections before people on the west coast have even closed the polling places.
