Stupid Azerbaijan
Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 08:17 PM by HEyHEY
I just embarrassed myself on the air. I usually scan the sports for funny last names, didn't see the name of the country. I know how to pronounce it, but it snuck up on me fast and I accidentally said "Azerbaigan."
I can handle screwing up a person's name - but a nation that's just damned shameful. :-(

1. HEyHEY -- didn't know you are on the radio!
You'll be forgiven I'm sure.

The first time I had to pronounce it, I had to ask an expert I was interviewing.

(For those who don't know, the country lies on the west bank of the Caspian Sea, and may hold the key to a substantial portion of the fossil fuel reserves under that body of water. Which would be why Cheney, Baker and the rest of the crowd have been cozying up to them.)

But as for today they got beat 2-0 by England in soccer ;-)

7. Yeah, but no-one could find it on a map.
It's just another one of those made up countries down south of Russia. Like Nagorno-Karabakh - like that's even a real country.

11. It used to be...
...now it's effectively controlled by Armenia, although they claim to be an autonomous republic so that Armenia can avoid uncomfortable quesions about what happened there.

12. That's what I thought. It's the area the 2 countries were fighting over.
IIRC, the Armenians call it Artsakh (unless I'm thinking of another place in that case).

13. That is correct...
NK/Artsakh is a largely Armenian enclave (which had a substantial number of Azeris living there also) that was made part of Azerbaijan when Azerbaijan was a Russian province during the Russian empire. It was kept as part of Azerbaijan for (dubious) political reasons during the Soviet era and then after the Soviet Union split up it declared independence from Azerbaijan, setting off a war between Az and Armenia, with ethnic violence against the other group in both countries. Russia played both countries off against each other but Armenia ended up occupying NK and a chunk of Azerbaijan proper to boot.

14. The town I live in has an "Artsakh Street"
It is a small street in front of an Armenian church. (The town has one of the largest Armenian populations in the country, which is why I know a bit about Armenian issues.)

15. The only town that I'm aware has a substantial Armenian community...
...is Watertown, MA, but no doubt there are others. There is a substantial Armenian diaspora that has funded development in NK, including a new paved road linking NK with the rest of Armenia.

23. That's the town I'm talking about.
When I was growing up, it had the second largest Armenian population in the US, with Fresno, CA being first. But I've recently heard that Hollywood now has the largest Armenian population, and even is referred to as "Little Armenia."

I'm somewhat surprised you're aware of Watertown, small town that it is. Are you Armenian?

I went to college in the 617 area code so I'm not unfamiliar with Watertown. I think I even had breakfast there once... :-)

16. my on air blunders have been classic
I was back announcing Charles Mingus's "Pithecanthropus Erectus" but I just couldn't spit it out. "Pithe...pithe...pithe...um...Erectus" and then I burst out laughing and had to pot the mic down.

That was right at the beginning of my radio "career" when I was doing the 12am - 5am shift.

A couple of years ago I accidentally referred to the "anals of modern jazz".

I read a PSA once and left out one key word, which I didn't realize until I got to the end.

It was something like:

This is Sexual Abuse Awareness week, and the Ann Arbor task force is holding a series of lectures and workshops. Yadda yadda yadda.

The word I missed? Abuse.

So I am reading along, and thinking "they're holding sexual awareness workshops? and I am reading a public service announcement about it on a public radio station?" By the time I get to the end...I'm giggling (again, this was at the very beginning of my radio career) ...until I realize that I left out that important word and then - OMG - I was mortified.
