It was my fathers birthday and a major occasion to my family who are real Christians, not the fundies you see and hear on tv . Thus it would be disrespectful to them for me to support such an occasion.

How many times can one say "dubya's stupid" with 50 replies all saying "yes he's very stupid". In a discussion those topics which raise a diversity of opinions will those discussed the most. D.U. contains many faithful and devout Christians, it contains many atheists, it contains pagans &c.&c. therefore it is natural that discussions of religion will arise.

Another Catholic checking in. I see no need to drag religion into everything (a comment directed at both those pro and anti religion); but surely we should be capable of reasoned discussion of it when it arises naturally.
