that plane is not even in production yet. It is the new Raptor, F-22. Also, from the arresting cable behind it, it looks like they were testing it for naval landings on a carrier. It's actually an incredible aircraft. Looks like a scary accident nonetheless.

3. You are mistaken. F18

Unless i'm very much mistaken. It's got all the lines of the F18....

Besides, They'd shoot the guy that fucked up an F-22.

4. No that is not an F18
F18 is much more slender and the tails don't lean out at the degree either. I'll find a pic. Also, if you look closely I think you can make out the name F-22 on the top of the fuselage.

6. I think that's an -18.
What you think says F-22 probably says VF-XX, standing for the unit the aircraft is assigned to. Actually, since it's an -18, it would be VFA-XX.

I could be wrong, but military aircraft used to be a hobby of mine.

16. No shit?
I remember when I got to Langley in '93 they told me, "Yeah, we won't have these much longer (F-15) because the F-22 is due out real soon. That was 12 years ago. :)

8. Yeah I think you guys are correct.

Makes sense as no F-22 is going to be in the Navy. That is the JSF.

Edited on Sun Mar-27-05 10:28 AM by aeolian
That is Boeing's concept plane for the JSF. It lost the bidding.

Lockheed builds the JSF, and it looks a lot like the F-22. :)

...If I knew how to upload images, I'd show you...

Edited on Sun Mar-27-05 05:50 PM by Maestro
I know what a JSF is. What I said was that the Navy was never going to use the F22 it was going to use the JSF. Jesus Christ.

12. Ummm - is there a link to this story/pic?
.
.
.

and ever the skeptic

1 Where's the other plane?

2 Looks like F.2 on the side behind the cockpit . . .

3 Gimme a link!!

Looks more like some sort of test crash -

pretty neet one too, - I don't see any debris on the runway -

SOMETHING woulda let loose when it hit that arresting cable . . .

but a landing with this is no miracle

- it's only the nosecone missing that I can see, the engine and all the aerodynamic controls are behind the cockpit - so the nosecone wouldn't effect a landing that much - not on land anyways

a land landing does not have the critical landing demands of one on an aircraft carrier - -

It was just a test landing IMO - maybe no collision was involved - they just left some parts off?

as for 2 jets hitting in mid-air and landing safely (with an at the ready arresting strap to boot)?

I don't think so (don't argue - GIMME A LINK!)

21. Airplanes. F-18, F-22, and JSF
Edited on Sun Mar-27-05 10:37 AM by aeolian
Here's an FA-18 Hornet. Note long, almost straight wings, and two engines.

Here's the F-22. Triangular wings, two engines.

And here's the JSF (Lockheed's winning entry). Single engine, triangular wings. This shot shows the second fan opened up for a vertical take off/landing (or hovering!) The engine intake nozzles are also slightly different from the F-22. But the two do look a lot alike.
