Boston Protest Pics

Shalom Keller - Iraq Veterans Against the War

I didn't catch her name, with Military Families Speak Out, her mom is a National Guard member stationed in Iraq, she's a great speaker, I was impressed.

I missed her name, she is a Palestinian lady with family in both Gaza and Iraq

Another person whose name I missed, a spoken word performer

Howard Zinn

The eye in the sky was watching

A speaker from one of the student groups, this guy is a firebrand. He could do good things. He's VERY high energy.

Another spoken word performer, calls himself Affrodesiac (I'm not sure of the spelling), good stuff, talented dude.

Another speaker whose name I missed (I didn't do much good at getting names). Very eloquent guy. I wish he wasn't so soft spoken though, his voice didn't carry too well, even with the PA system

The requisite anarchists contingent.

1. Cool pictures, how was the weather?
It was a beautiful day in Washington yesterday and there was no protest to me and my friends shock but we still had a great day.

2. Started out beautiful, got kind of cloudy later in the day and the
temps dropped pretty quick. I got there just after noon, and had to take off my fleece. By 3:45 or so (when I left), I need my fleece and the light jacket I had with me.

Overall, not bad at all though.

I only left early because I had to come home and do laundry and such for work tomorrow.

4. My problem was I expected it to be too cold
I wore my Green soft jacket over a longsleeved shirt, big mistake as it turned out to be beautiful and everyone else wore short sleeves. BTW I may be PMing you about that place of yours since it is conveintly near a station, dunno yet though but just a headsup.

I looked around for other DU'ers who I've met before, and I just couldn't find any.

AH well, it was a nice day for it though. I needed the sunshine and exercise :).

13. I probably would have recognized Will if I'd seen him, or Matcom
or possibly even Kathy, but to be honest, after the first 1/2 hour or so, I was spending more time with my face behind the camera than looking for people :).

11. Thanks.
There are more pics, but most of them are just pics of the whole crowd or different angles of the speakers.

There are a few of a big set of signboards they had set up with a picture and name of each soldier killed, very touching, but the pics didn't come out that well, so I left them off.

19. Those are reduced a great deal too.
Original resolution is 2560x1920

I can get excellent 8x10 prints out of it with no issues. If I shoot in the RAW mode instead, I can get 9x13 prints that look really good.

21. Thanks for posting the pics!!!
I was watching the news tonite. On channel 5 and 7 the rally got about a 30 second mention. Then the one on channel 5 spent the next 4-5 minutes on the all important, St Patty's parade. Not that I have anything against them, but to think that its a more important news story than roughly 10,000 Bostonians protesting the war, never ceases to amaze me.

Wow, what a day! Great energy from the crowd I'd estimate to be somewhere between 1000-2000.

There was a mix of people of all ages, but overall there were more greybeards and silverbacks than youth. We old hippies and activists need to keep organizing events and reaching out to the young. There was a large contingent from veteransforpeace.org and billionaires for bush. Other groups I saw were several town and city-based peace groups, American Friends Service Committee, socialists, communists, and animal rights/vegans.

The weather was decent for end of March, at least the snow forecast for tonight held off.

The "eye in the sky" in the photo was very loud, annoying and totally not needed. It overed overhead all afternoon. The police were out in force, but no riot gear as I saw in the Chicago photos. I'd say there were 25 in uniform. No horses.

Are recruiting offices open on Sundays? One of the speakers said one result of the rally was to shut down one in the neighborhood. Nevertheless, at the end 12 had signed up for civil disobedience to block the entrance; they marched off with the anarchist band and others in tow.

I will post future related events in the Massachusetts and Activist forums.

All in all, a great day.

p.s. Forgot to mention the media. Several "peoples" media groups signed in, including Indy and some guy named Pitt from Truthout. The AP and Boston Globe represented the MSM. Watch the wires tonight/tomorrow.

39. Nice to see free people. Where are all the police?
Wow. Chicago was a military outpost on Saturday March 19. It's so refreshing to see photos of demonstrations in other cities and states where police presence is minimal. Our children (age 16 & 12) walked with us in Chicago: they received a civics lesson on how our constitutional rights to free speech and assembly are violated. There were nearly as many city, county and state cops as there were (thousands!) demonstrators. They were armed from head to toe with kevlar, batons, guns, mace, cuffs, dogs. They were on foot, horse, car, truck, boat (many on the Chicago River!), helicopter, and truck. I saw at least a dozen paddy-wagons and 8 or 10 Department of Corrections buses - big long buses! They arrested a Quaker and a UCC minister. Tough people, those peace-niks! Thanks for showing your happy pictures.

40. For the most part, the police presence was very subdued, until
later on. There was a march after the rally that was unlicensed and brought police attention, apparently 5 people were arrested following that (all of whom were bailed out and released by 10:30 last night according to Indymedia).

I guess Chicago didn't learn anything from the '68 convention eh? The Chicago police have long been opposed to demonstrations like that.
