Nude Shock from Mr. Spock
NEW YORK: Leonard Nimoy, more famous as Spock of Star Trek , is publishing another book of nude photographs, this time focusing on an obese cabaret troupe called The Fat Bottom Revue .

The 73- year-old star says he convinced his models to pose for him by showing them classic nude works by Herb Ritts and Helmut Newton.

"They are interested in fat liberation.Their self-esteem is strong. They will tell you that too many people suffer because the body they live in is not the body you find in the fashion magazines", New York Post quoted Nimoy as saying.

Well, at least it's more fun than Price Club commercials!

3. Note where the story comes from
In India, most people barely get to eat a sustenance diet. For that reason, fat is considered to be attractive, on the assumption that you can only get fat if you've got extra resources.

Also I don't think they have problems with nudity or sexuality, since there are religious artworks showing things like Shiva copulating with Kali. (However, there are still taboos; for example, until very recently it was unheard of for couples to kiss in the movies. Fiery erotic dances are okay, but a tame little Doris Day smooch was undecorous.)

4. Yes, the India TImes is an interesting newspaper
So I take a glance at it now and then. Saw this one and thought it was funny.

But they keep a wary eye on what we are doing over here.

5. I don't think it is fair to paint over 1 billion people like that
"Indians" are a very diverse lot. Many Hindu fundamentalists just like there are fundys here and elsewhere. Sexual repression just like everywhere else.

7. Hmmm...
These Hindu fundamentalists you speak of-- any relation to the belief system that came up with tantric sex?

I admit that there are risks in generalizing about large populations of human beings, endowed with their creator with free will and an uncanny ability to rationalize nearly any conceivable viewpoint.

Perhaps I should have made more explicit what I really believe, that Hindus, in the aggregate, have way less problem with sexual matters than Christians, in the aggregate. Will you grant me that?

10. Nope
Not the Hindu's I know. Most Hindu girls I know would almost fear for their life if their fathers knew they were not virgins. Very much of a boys will be boys attitude, but girls are kept on a very short leash, by and large, of the folks I know.

8. The story started in the NY Post - here - and was picked up worldwide.
So the fact that it's in the Indian press doesn't put any particular 'spin' on the ball.

And the Fat Bottom Revue is right here, not there.
