Update on ignorant teacher who didn't know about Barbara Jordan.
Edited on Wed Mar-16-05 08:52 PM by Bouncy Ball
My daughter took her Barbara Jordan book, a transcript of her 1976 keynote speech, and the list we compiled yesterday of Democratic government leaders from Texas.

The teacher looked at the Barbara Jordan book and said she thought she "might" remember her now.

She agreed to add all of the names on my daughter's list EXCEPT Henry B. Gonzalez and Lloyd Bentsen. When my daughter asked why she said "No one's ever heard of them." (Meaning the teacher never has.) My daughter told her she has and she said "Well, you're different." The teacher apparently didn't explain that comment.

So she added the names up on the board and my daughter said a lot of the kids changed their minds! They were asking "Who is THAT?" and now there are apparently only two kids doing bush and none doing Poppy, Babs, or Pickles. No kid is doing Kay Bailey Hutchison anymore (only one was, and she changed over to Ann Richards).

The teacher did agree to let my daughter do her report on Barbara Jordan. We listened to an audio file of her giving the 1976 keynote speech last night. That thing was GREAT.

Edited to add the thread in which this was first discussed:

1. No one's heard of Lloyd Bentsen?
Wasn't he Dukakis' running mate in 1988?

4. She was a phenomena.....A brilliant woman
elected to the Texas state senate, senate leader, and an outspoken voice on the Nixon Watergate committee. When Barbara Jordan spoke, her deep, gravelly voice, sounded like the voice of God. She was magnificent, and totally devoted to government service, at the exclusion of her personal life.

Jimmy Carter's biggest mistake was not choosing Barbara to be his Attorney General...Her pre-mature death was a tragedy for America. She is one of my all-time heroes.

19. Yes, you spoke so eloquently of her.
I remember her especially from my college days.

I am deeply saddened that Barbara Jordan is no longer with us. And, we cannot forget her. Ever!

9. Well, my theory is, give them better choices
than just bush, bush, bush, bush, bush and Kay Bailey Hutchison and they'll pick those other choices to learn about! LOL!

Either that or she drank too much kool-aid.

18. You really ought to talk with her superiors about this. It's definitely..
...not ok that she tried to only give them a list of conservatives to research. Especially when 2 of them weren't even government officials. Barbara? Laura? Wtf?

21. I read your earlier post. Unbelievable!!!!
What the hell is wrong with this woman and why is she allowed in the classroom?
A damn shame that the student has to educate the teacher.
I'm sure your daughter will write something incredible and put the teacher to shame for not knowing who this magnificent woman is.

24. Yay!
While I'm still worried that your daughter's history instructor can't remember all the way back to 1988 I'm glad Miss SuperHiBounce Ball got Ms. Ignorant to add some more names to the list. I'm doubly glad so many of the kids jumped at the opportunity to change topics, too. I was worried they might stick with what they'd already picked out.

I hope the teacher doesn't resent your daughter or mark her grade down in retaliation.
