Poor Alf Landon...

"I Ran For President And All I Got Were These Lousy Eight Electoral Votes"

Up until 1936, there was a saying: "As goes Maine, so goes the Nation."

After 1936, there was a new saying: "As goes Maine, so goes... Vermont."

10. I don't know enough about Landon to tell you.
By all indications, he was a moderate.

11. Yeah I wonder if he still thought that FDR was fascist tho
Dewey and Willke were moderate too. Which is why top GOP brass wanted to nominate someone like Robert Taft in 1952 because they wanted a real republican.

13. Right, Taft died though
I wonder what happens if he lives. That also marked the beginning of a more internationlist instead of isolationist republican party.

15. The GOP establishment I read loved Taft though
It was republican activists, not party leadership who got Ike to run.

17. Right thats why Ike won reelection yet the GOP lost seats
The McCarthy's and Jenner's werent as popular. Jenner was the senator from Indiana who called George Marshall a traitor or something like that.

18. I was 5 when he died.
I remember hearing about it on the news that he'd died at the age of 100. I remember being amazed that people could live that long!
