The Yugo
What did one look like? And weren't they only like 3,000 dollars?

1. little boxes
reminded me of the adobe cars of the SNL parody. They were very cheap, and apparently worth every cent.

4. I worked on the teevee show "Moonlighting". We bought THREE
for $11,000 total, so we could wreck two and drive one for an episode. The driving one we kept for production and on occasion when my clunker was in the shop, I'd drive the Yugo since everyone hated it. Each time I drove it, something would simply FALL off. I'd adjust the RV mirror, it'd just land in my hand. I'd roll down the window, the handle would fall off.

It was the source of endless amusement!

5. I have a great story about the value of the Yugo
I use to sell cars back in the early 90's. I was a victem of Bush Sr's recession and took a job selling cars in order to keep up with the bills and what not.

One day, someone came in to buy a new car and had 2 cars for trade. The first car was an early 80's Toyota Truck that was rusted everywhere, had over 300,000 miles, a stopsign was used for the floorboard in the cab and string held the passinger side door closed. The other car was a Yugo that was only about 5 years old, less than 30,000 miles and great shape.

We actually gave the guy more money for the Toyota Truck

6. So small that one got blown right off the Mackinac Bridge
The driver was slightly intoxicated, but below legal limits. I have a friend who actually thinks it was the fault of the bridge operators, not Yugo.

7. The Yugo.
"

That's one right there.

And yes, they were very very cheap and very very crappy. My mother owned one at one point, and hated it.

It was also immortalized in a song by a group called the Left-Wing Fascists called "I Drive a Yugo!" which described one of the colors as "Monkey-Vomit Green."

You can find some history of the car here.

9. The only car worse than the Yugo was the Trabant
or "Trabi" as the east germans called it.

With a body made of reinforced paperboard, and a two-cylinder engine, it was the butt of jokes such as:

Q: "How many people does it take to make a Trabi?"
A: "Two. One to cut, and one to paste."

Q: "How do you double the resale value of a Trabi?"
A: "Fill 'er up!"

17. Oh yes
Or what is the max acceleration of a Trabi? That would be 9.81 m/s².

They're still a common sight (fading, but still there), especially as they're often given away for free. Not only that it's a car almost anyone can fix her/himself, they can be fun to drive too.

16. Wasn't the Yugo actually just a Fiat built in Yugoslavia?
They did not need to design it themselves, they just bought the tooling, etc.
