My college roommate that suicided w/ pills didn't.
We found out today that she bought a handgun before she headed to the snowy foothills. The police knew it was a gun when they found her, but did not release the info until they had verification that she had purchased the weapon. They were still thinking of options other than suicide to explain her death. The funeral will be a closed-casket affair, given that she 'blew her head off'.

New Mexico does not have a 'waiting period' w/ handguns. She must have paid attn to the instructions, because she had NEVER held a gun before (to best of our knowledge).

Waiting periods area GOOD thing.

1. How horrible.
It somehow makes suicide even worse to me when it's done in a more violent method. I agree with you about waiting periods on guns, though. As you might imagine, Texas doesn't have one either.

2. I'm really sorry about your friend
Suicide affects many people, many of whom wonder what on earth they could have done to stop it. I am just very, very sorry to hear this.

4. In all honesty I'm surprised she made it this long
at least she waited until her son (who will soon be living w/us) turned 18.

Some scars are too deep to bear. I think she had more than one of them.

6. Her poor son

If any of you are interested, I found Judy Collins' book "Sanity & Grace: A Journal of Suicide, Survival and Strength" to be very helpful and comforting. In my opinion, it's the best book on coping with suicide (and I've read quite a few).

3. Honestly, I doubt if "instructions" had anything to do with it
If a person really wants to commit suicide, nothing will stop them; including the unavailability of a gun.

7. Thanks, it is not really real yet though.
It will likely become REAL when I least suspect it.

8. Very sorry!
I read your earlier post. Then, I saw this one. This is very tragic, indeed. It would be nice if people treated depression as the disease it is, and not just "some mood swing!" It sounds like you were a good friend to her; you understood the truth of her pain.

You said you didn't know when it will become "real" for you, but when it does, it looks as if you have many people here who are ready to listen!!

Brightest Blessings!
