Poll question: How honest are you?
Edited on Thu Feb-17-05 02:03 PM by yvr girl
If someone gives you too much change (and you notice) do you say anything?

If they forget to charge you for something at a restaurant (a coffee for instance) do you mention it?

1. I think there are different kinds of honesty
Refusing to steal doesn't make you honest by itself.

4. Okay, so once I bought two bunches of green onions and they only
charged me for one, so I went up to the service desk to give them their 39 cents. They looked at me like I was insane. Clear conscience and all...

6. I always point out the error
I even argued with a checker at Walmart and she kept giving me money and I was trying to give it back. I left frustrated and 20 dollars richer. How dumb

7. A choice that isn't listed here...
I never do, except in mom-and-pop shops. Honest would be not marking up products 100-200% for things everyone needs.

8. If I was working as a cashier I would certainly say something
if the customer had extra change coming back to them. My job would require me to do this for good customer service. If I was at a restaurant and they forgot to charge me for a coffee, I'm not going to say anything about that. I'm getting a deal in that case, and I would assume that they meant to give me that deal (if I even happen to notice). If they can't do their job correctly, that's not my fault. I would only say something if I thought I was being overcharged.

9. I find that people usually say forget about it when you point out the
error. The most common scenario is someone forgetting to add a beverage onto your restaurant tab. You didn't charge me for the coffee. (Oh, thanks. Don't worry about it.)

10. Exceedingly in terms of ethics.
However, I do not point out the flaws of others to hurt them and label that as honesty.

12. I don't think that telling somebody they forgot to charge you for
something is pointing out a flaw. Anyone can make a mistake.

13. I would agree.
That is what I meant by honesty in terms of personal ethics. I guess my message didn't come through in the post. For the other part, I meant it in terms of people who use such terms as "brutally honest" and use honesty as a guise to insult another person. I certainly wouldn't think that telling someone they gave you too much change is "pointing out a flaw", but is something that any decent and ethical person would be obliged to do.

16. I totally agree
There are lots of people who use 'honesty' as an excuse to be mean.

It's all about the karma, baby.

15. I believe in & practice honesty.
If someone gives me too much change - then they still have to account for the error. I don't want to be part of giving someone else a bad day.

17. As the day is long.
Sad, according to some.

It's a matter of pride in who I am, and for that I blame my parents.

18. My wife got a young girl in trouble when she returned a $10 error.
Good thing it was her dad who owned the store. At least she didn't get fired.

19. One time the bank gave me $100 too much "cash back"
At the drive-up window.

I pulled around front to count it and spotted the error, parked the car, and brought it right back to them.

The teller was very appreciative.
