Pull up your pants or else, Virginia lawmakers warn
Pull up your pants or else, Virginia lawmakers warn
Wed Feb 9, 6:30 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Failing to pull up your pants in Virginia could cost you 50 dollars if the southern US state's legislators have their way.

The House chamber in Virginia's General Assembly voted 60-34 Tuesday in favor of the so-called "droopy drawers" bill to penalize men and women who wear their pants too low, exposing boxer shorts or sexy thong strings in a "lewd or indecent manner."

"Underwear is called underwear for a reason," said Republican lawmaker John Reid. "Most of us would identify this as the coarsening of society."

The conservative state's Senate must now vote on the legislation, which some opponents denounced as a bill targeting young blacks imitating rap stars wearing loose pants, local media reported. Citizens groups have warned that the proposed law could lead to racial discrimination.

1. OH DEAR GOT THE CHILDREN! WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN!
We have to save them from Butt-Crack! A whole generation is at stake!
Now, I always thought that those low-rise jeans were merely tacky, and that my gut reaction came from jealousy. Little did I know that the fabric of our society is hanging together by a thong-string!

2. How does this law work for people who don't wear underwear?
I mean, if my pants were hanging low, my underwear wouldn't be showing so would I still be fined?

4. repub son called....
Edited on Thu Feb-10-05 06:30 PM by jackster
as some of you know I have a 20 something year old "moderate" (his word) but bush/reagan-worshiping son who also works for a local station airing progressive talk.

today he calls outraged about this! When I tried to tell him that it was the conservatives who did this, he just took off.... wouldn't let me get a word in at all. Tried to tell me that no, it wasn't the conservatives.... he just wouldn't shut up. He gets like this alot - he is a repub after all.

Later we're going to talk about this and I'm going to be armed....

any and everything anyone can give me on this will be helpful!

5. I don't think there should be a law about sagging but I
find it to be in very bad taste and makes those doing it look like thugs.

One of my friends told me it comes from prison culture and when a prisoner sags his pants it means he is "available." So, kids who would probably beat to death any guy who came on to them are wearing their clothes in a way that says I'm "available." Doesn't make sense to me. I also wonder, is it difficult to walk with your pants sagging so low?

Lawmakers Drop Droopy Pants Bill, Citing 'Indignation'

And here's the argument for the republican son-it was a bill introduced and supported by Republicans. That's what his party does.
