Steve Earle.

I guess if you factor in The Headhunters, it's a band.

Steve Earle just flat out rocks.

They've been my de facto choice for favorite band since the early 80's

Even now in their "golden years" they are putting out some pretty terrific stuff.

16. Bad Religion
Gotta love'm. Back in the late '80s I used to have a Bad Religion t-shirt with their logo (a christian cross with a red circle and line drawn across it) My mom threw it away, though to this day she won't admit it. :)

22. I had that shirt
I wore it down to rags.

My mom absolutely hated that shirt. Not because of the anti-religion symbol but because it was so ratty looking.

30. Henry Cow
Since some time in the '70s. (I'm no longer certain at what point I decided they were better than everybody else.) They could get away with anything: sophisticated jazz-rock fusion, dense industrial noise, dark hopeless goth, Who-style mosh that made you want to storm the barricades...

They broke up in 1979, and there has never been a better rock band since.

One great lack in my life is a musician who's currently working that I can obsess over. Nobody's good enough. (Not even the musicians who used to play in Henry Cow! They're always interesting, but there was an incredible synergy when they were together.)

If pressed to name a contemporary favorite, it's Mike Keneally, who was Frank Zappa's stunt guitarist in the 1988 big band, and has been making his own records (and very good ones) since 1992 or so.

33. Stereolab..
... is in my top ten of all time. I've been listening to music since 1964, so I've had a lot of time. :)

I was listening to Peng! just the other day. Beautiful. Also, Mars Audiac Quintet, Random Transient Noise Bursts with Announcements, Emperor Tomato Ketchup, Cobra and Phases.

Stereolab is a great band. They came to Dallas way back when and I was there. I love them but their show was competent but mechanical. I guess that was to be expected.

Other all-time faves include Eno, Bowie, Cocteau Twins, Squarepusher, Boards of Canada, Wolfgang Press (last 2 records), DJ Shadow, and various brilliant acts that for whatever reason only made one brilliant record, such as Portishead, Goldie, My Bloody Valentine.

48. I'll vote BROOOOOCE, too! Since '76, as well.
I didn't get hooked right away but my roomie in college was totally mesmerized by "Born to Run," and Bruce caught on with me cuz he played it so much. I got into it, then backtracked to his earlier stuff. I now own all his stuff from "Live" back on vinyl.

Three things about Bruce I find so intriguing.

First is that he was a kind of Woody Guthrie for the Reagan years, when I lived in the Rust Belt and could understand songs like "My Home Town." (Still chokes me up, as I left mine and went South due to the economy, too.)

The second thing is, his music has grown with me. The older I get, the more meaning and relevance I seem to find in his lyrics.

Third, he sings a lot about fast cars and I am a gearhead! The absolute BEST "car song" I have ever heard is "Racin' in the Streets" off "Darkness on the Edge of Town." Not yer typical hot car song.

He's the Boss, for sure.
