Who else doesn't watch The Simpsons anymore?
And why not?

Me, I'm just fatigued, I guess. Plus, since it's on 23 times a day, there's a better chance I'll come across one I haven't seen if I'm desperate.

1. Not with young children around
I don't want the kid watching it or see me watching it because I don't want him to mimic Bart Simpson. (It's bad enough my spouse lets him look at this crap on Nickelodeon!)

I haven't seen much of them in 7 years...

24. What?
Huh? You don't want your kid watching the smartest episodic series in TV history? Why?

Besides, if YOU actually watched it you would find that Bart is intentionally written with MANY redemming qualities. He's a smart mouth little brat at times, but he would go to bat over and over for any member of his family. He apologizes when he's done something hurtful.

I think you've made a knee-jerk assumption about this show. My sister lets her daughters watch it all the time. (Ages 9 and 4). They are as well-behaved children as i've ever seen, both get nothing but A's in school, and are happy, gregarious kids.

Methinks you have been bamboozled by the anti-culture crowd.
The Professor

3. I've only seen it a couple of times
I'm just not much of a TV person. I'd rather read a book.

4. I've been watching less and less TV in general.
I dunno, there's nothing really new on TV nowadays, nothing exciting. All seems like the same boring old stuff.

5. Whoa!
What's the deal here? The Simpson's is one of the best, intelligently written entertainment programs on television.

You have to know what is going on in the world today to 'get' much of the humor. You need to know something about Christian theology to understand the jabs at the religious right. You have to know something about the culture in America in the 60s and 70s to know what Homer is talking about. You have to know about the present state of education in our public schools to comprehend what Lisa is going through at Springfield Elementary. You have to understand politics to see the satire revolving around Mayor Quimby.

Bart may occassionally be involved in outrageous stunts, but usually he ends up doing the right thing.

Despite what Homer puts Marge and the kids through, the family survives.

Now, I don't think it is as fresh as it was even three years ago, But, for instance, tonight's episode about prescription drugs was current and funny.

Folks who don't watch or are hyper-critical of the Simpson's ... just don't know what they are missing or what they are talking about.

6. Well, you can't pay attention to everything that's "the best".
I was just wondering if anyone besides me has cut down on their intake.

22. Um, I don't watch, and I know exactly what I'm missing.
It's just not high on my list of priorities, though.

16. No kidding!
Last night's was one of the funnier ones from the past two or three seasons.

I generally think that the show has gone downhill - but it's still vastly superior to most of the other dreck on TV these days.

8. I have never liked The Simpsons
Edited on Mon Jan-17-05 06:31 AM by Skittles
sorry, I don't find it amusing enough to sustain watching it; the colors are garish and the voices so f***ing annoying they make me want to hang myself. And yes I "GET" the stuff, too much, actually - like I say, amusing but not funny. DON'T tell me I "don't know what I'm talking about" - I know EXACTLY what I'm talking about.

The Simpson's is still good, but like you I'm getting tired of it. How long can that show go on???

10. Not as much as I used to but it's a great show, like when the bus explodes
after Otto rolls it down a hill or Homer causing a nuclear nightmare, or Bart's takeoff on General Patton, it's funny stuff. You just can't take some of the parts too seriously or you'll turn into a fundie.

The best part about shows like the Simpsons or Beavis and Butthead is how they got so many fundies all bent out of shape with no where to go.

17. well, you only have a couple months to wait
new Family Guy season starts May 1st.

Meanwhile, we will have "American Dad" to tide us over, which looks to be as good.

13. I have always been a rabid fan, but have not watched in a while..
I have been a huge fan since day one of the series however many years ago. I have a massive collection of Simpsons memorabilia, and I watch the re-runs quite frequently. But the past 2-3 seasons I feel like they have been repeating themselves and recycling plot lines and sub-plots. It used to be there were at least a dozen gems of quality lines and references per show. Now it seems like there are less and less the few times I"ve watched it.

14. I still watch the show.
I looked forward to this season after the final two shows from last year seemed to indicate they may be taking a more political approach. So far that hasn't panned out. Few chuckles but not as endearing as in past years.

Nothing against the show. It's great. I just don't watch alot of TV anymore period, and I would echo your sentiments about the fatigue and the ubiquity of Simpsons reruns.

21. I used to watch it religiously, but
I don't watch ANY prime time shows religiously anymore. I have a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old. Between supper, dishes, bathtime, and bedtime, who has time to watch TV regularly? And when I do watch TV in the evenings, it's rarely regular network TV. It's usually a satellite channel.

Sometimes the TV is just on in the kitchen or something, and I catch bits and pieces of some shows.

23. Not anymore on TV, I have the DVD's....
and the new episodes just can't compare to the older ones. I kind of gave up after about season 10.

The new episodes have plenty of funny moments, but they just aren't as well-written as the older ones.

25. The tonal shift of the series
The show still succeeds as a savage critic of popular culture, but its heart and soul have long since dissipated. There simply is no comparison between the first eight sublime seasons and what was to follow: the characters lost their nuance; the situations grew far too outlandish; and gone were many of the digressions as well as the intricate framework and internal logic of plot. Oh, and Homer's become a real asshole.

Watch the DVDs of Seasons 3-5 and weep for what once was the zenith of television programming.

28. They jumped the shark years ago
Edited on Mon Jan-17-05 05:45 PM by TrogL
They need to advance time about 10 years.

  • Marge divorced Homer and is currently living in sin with the minister.
  • Homer is currently homeless. He lives in a box near the Duff brewery, living on handouts from grateful workers.
  • Lisa is barefoot and pregnant. Corrupt politicians' sons got all the scholarships. Marge never did get around to explaining birth control and Homer's explanation was incoherent and wrong.
  • Maggie died of malnutrition, being too slow at the dinner table to get any nourishment before the rest of the family gobbled it down (with sound effects).
  • Moe was killed in a gang shootout in his bar.
  • Barney inherited and is rich after almost losing the bar. He now attends AA regularly.
  • Burns died of skin cancer. Buy a hat, man.
  • Smithers inherited the power company and ran it into the ground trying to turn it "green". Massive unemployment.
  • Bart is a successful used car salesman. He married Milhouse.
