HELP!!!! My fridge is on the fritz!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:( the freezer part isn't freezing and the fridge part isn't very cold.

I called the landlord but there's nothing to be done until tomorrow. Can they fix it or will they have to put in a new one???
(not that I have to pay for it or anything!)

I defrosted the sucker a couple of days ago and now it's acting funny

2. Check for ice buildup around the compressor which should be
underneath it. IT could also be plugged up somewhere, where ice formed and it can't drain.

Best to check it yourself, chances are it's just plugged up down below.

5. Get an ice chest in the meantime
Edited on Tue Jul-15-03 06:43 PM by supernova
since you can't do anything about it right now.

Get an ice chest, ice, and fill it with what you deem essential.

edit: How old is your fridge? If it's an older model (10-15+ yrs), it may be cheaper to replace it rather than repair it.

9. I felt it was so important
that I spent my 100th post on it. :)

Did the compressor suggestion help? Maybe you could have a trusted friend/neighbor look at it.

Mine, btw, has an opera singer in the freezer. It doesn't seal properly, and occasionally sings very loudly - great projection.

11. I guess this isn't a self-defrosting model?
Go get that ice chest, unless you especially enjoy and can afford take out 3-4x/day.

13. The reason I asked if you had heard the fridge running
was because if you haven't, it could be something as simple as the solenoid on the compressor (the thing that compresses the freon which does the cooling).

Unfortunately, the upshot is that until someone can come & take a look at it & either fix it or give you a new fridge, the only thing you can do is get some ice packs & put the stuff in your fridge into an ice-chest.:-(

It sucks, I know. My fridge went out over the Memorial Day weekend. Best of luck to you, Darth_Kitten.

15. you can save your food or most of it
Neighbors will help. Get all you can packed in ice in the ice chest. Ask your next-door neighbors if they have room for you to store a few items. Even if you are not very outgoing -- and I am the complete opposite of outgoing -- people tend to pitch in and help if you ask during a situation like this. Especially since it is something small they can do, which makes them feel kind and helpful, yet doesn't cost them any time or money.

17. hey, consider yourself lucky
Did you know refrigerators are a great example of what is known as a perfected technology? I mean, everyone has one, they run 24/7, constantly from the day you buy them, for 20 or 30 years, and how often have you ever heard someone say "my refrigerator broke?"

now, you say you just defrosted. thats a problem. first, be aware it can take 24 hours for a fridge to cool down. and if you moved the control, it can take hours and hours for the adjustment to take effect.

But I hope you didn't try to help the defrosting along by hacking at it with a knife or anything, that can cause problems.
