I am not sure if the mandolin is really stong in this song, but it is a great tune. My daughter and her band will be playing it tomorrow at a blue grass festival here. They are all high school kids and they truly rock, even playing the Grateful Dead. AND they get $200 a show. They have made more money this month than I have.

Edited on Sat Sep-27-03 06:14 PM by Redneck Socialist
Dave Grisman, Chris Thile (his band is called nickel creek) SAM BUSH !!!! (don't worry no relation to the shrub) often overlooked is Tim O'brien. Tim O is a great singer and song writer too by the way, and of course Bill Monroe. Happy listening!

9. ditto on Tim O'Brien --
Whatever he does, mandolin, singing, harmony, arranging, song selection, he does very well. A class act all the way.

8. You want this cd
http://www.acousticdisc.com/acd_html/acd35.html
Unfortunately, you need to buy it, then dub/tape the music only, or Frank Wakefield's introductions to his numbers will cause you to go ballistic or postal as suits your personal inclination. But the music is simply beyond all belief.
For an introduction to Monroe, his duet record with Doc Watson is probably the best bet:

Absolutely cannot be beat.
Enjoy!

23. Have you heard of "Old and In the Way"????
No, not the DU poster, but the band. Formed in '73 with David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, Vassar Clements, John Kahn, and Peter Rowan.

There are 3 discs available from them. Very cool stuff.

15. Gonzo bluegrass/newgrass mandolin player--SAM BUSH
No relation to the idiot. This guy played with the seminal Newgrass Revival and he's still touring.

Heard him last year and he totally rocked.

And that Nickle Creek guy is also fabulous--doesn't play that much actual bluegrass on his albums, but when he does, he just burns down the barn.

16. Doyle Lawson!
Word of warning, he specializes in extremely Jesus-y bluegrass gospel which might be offputting to some, but his playing can't be beat. He never strays from tradition but he still sounds very fresh. Rock lead guitarists could learn a lot from his solos. Never a misplaced note. The perfect musician.

You'll also want to find the acoustic version of Steve Earle's "Copperhead Road"...
